Summer Sausage
Here we are hip deep in summer. The days, these days, pass like a flipbook with barely two memories to rub together. It goes too fast and sometimes the memories of the past, though often unreliable, offer a cool fresh breeze.
There was a time, a wonderful time, when newspapers were the size of tablecloths and milkmen roamed the streets freely. I’ll take a pound of Lambrecht’s, thank you. That might be just me, but I’m willing to gamble there are a few other nostalgic saps out there. Every time and season has its cast of characters, its hooves and hoof prints, the smug and the struggling woven together and then unraveled into statistics and allegiances. We ignore the inexorable truth at our peril. We’re all in this together like the ingredients of a fine summer sausage. The next time you buy one, think of your community.
