One of our great middle school teachers accompanied fifteen 7th graders from her Religion class to serve the poor at the St. Vincent de Paul meal program site. They did an excellent job pouring milk, coffee, and water, cleaning tables and chairs, and distributing treats to the 421 guests that night.
Here are some of their thoughts:
When I was at St. Vincent de Paul I served water. It was so hard to believe that all those people are so hungry and might not even have homes. It felt so good to do this. When I got home I went to bed and I felt greedy that I had a warm bed and nice clothes. It's hard to believe that some people make fun of them sometimes. A parent who drove us said, "One of these people could be Jesus in disguise." When I go there I really appreciate all that I have. Megan S.
At St. Vincent de Paul I felt bad for all the people who were poor and had to live on the streets. I went through 16 pitchers of milk and I loved helping the people. Alexis P.
I felt good that I was able to help people who are in need. I liked talking to people and sometimes they even made me laugh. I realized how lucky I am to be able to have meals every day. It makes me want to do more to help the less fortunate. Jared G.
On Monday, February 1, the students in the school participated in a lunch drive to make lunches for the less fortunate in the community. Our principal received the folllowing letter from the parish representative of the Franciscan Peacemakers outreach program.
Dear Mrs. Joyner,
Thanks to you and all those involved at St. Mary Parish School for the successful outreach to the less fortunate served by the Franciscan Peacemakers. When I met with Deacon Steve and Carmen from Franciscan Peacemakers today, they were very excited to tell me that the school had provided 528 lunches. They had just returned from delivering all the lunches. Carmen noted that some families receiving them were overjoyed that they had food for more than one day! As I was collecting more lunches from parishioners, one of the 8th grade girls was coming from practice or a game at the activity center and was very excited to ask me to guess how many lunches the school provided. She also mentioned how awesome it was for her to be a part of the program. St. Mary School has sure helped in the formation of the leaders of our future. They "get it" from all the evidence I have seen through the years at St. Mary. Keep up the great work!
Gratefully,
Mike R.
Save the Date!
The St. Mary open house will be held on January 31st.
More details to follow, but please plan on joining us for Mass and a tour of the school.
Registration information will be available for the 2010-11 school year.
Hope to see you there!
Exciting news!
The 8th grade girls BLUE team won the Girls Division 1 Elizabeth Seton Volleyball Championship last night at Catholic Memorial High School. This is an 8th grade invitational tournament open to the top teams in the 10 county Milwaukee Archdiocese.
They defeated St. John the Evangelist 3 - 1 in the Championship match.
Congratulations to our 8th grade girls.
Team members: Katherine, Kelly, Madison, Sydney, Jenna, Paige, Abby
Coaches Ted, Rob, Mel
A few of our fantastic 8th grade girls have begun a project to sew mittens for the needy in the community. They are calling it the "Three Little Kittens" project.
The mittens they are sewing will be given to inner city classrooms for children who cannot play outside safely in the winter because they do not have mittens.
Way to go girls - thanks for setting an example for all of us to use our talents to serve others in the community.
Last years’ First Graders Experienced “Inscribing Jesus on Your Hearts” Through Community Outreach
Over the years, one of our Senior parishioners enjoyed the letters first graders had sent to her in our Senior Letter program. Before she passed away last spring, this parishioner let the children know just how much those letters meant to her. She left a gift to them!
First, she treated all the first graders to cupcakes and juice. She also donated funds to our school. Through her generosity, our school now has the amazing computer program, Kidspiration, which the Kindergarten through 5th grade students will use to enhance their writing, reading, and math skills.
Children reaching out to Seniors…..a Senior parishioner touching the lives of our students. What a great connection!!

Our school principal Linda Joyner received this note from a 7th grade parent. We removed the names to share it with you.

Hi Linda,
I want to share something Parent to Parent.
Last night I got first hand confirmation that St Mary's is instilling the values that I had hoped a Catholic education would. You may or may not know that a dad of one of the 7th grade girls was in a bad car accident last evening. Last I heard he was fine and I hope that still holds true! We learned of the accident in the carpool after volleyball practice. The daughter of the hurt dad called her mom and we got some of the details of what had happened. All of the girls were very concerned.
Here is where St Mary's comes in......
One of the girls said "I wish we still had our morning meetings at school so we could pray". Another girl said "well, we can right now". In unison all the girls prayed a Hail Mary, and then prayed for the girl’s dad, the family of the hurt dad, the grandmother and her friend (who were passengers in the car), and they prayed for the drunk driver that had hit them that he would get help and not do this again.
I was never more proud! Our little girls are sure growing up!

Kelly Frings, St. Mary’s 2006 alum and an incoming Senior at Pius XI High School has made a verbal commitment to accept a full-ride basketball scholarship to Bradley University. She informed Lady Braves head coach Paula Buscher of her decision to attend the Missouri Valley school during a recent phone conversation.
The 6'1 forward, was named honorable mention All-State by the Associated Press this past season, and 1st team All-Conference, after leading the Classic Eight conference in scoring (13.1 points per game), rebounding (7.4), steals (2.1), and 3-point field goals (23)
Frings joins her AAU teammate Kelsey Budd, (Jr; Sauk Prairie H.S., WI) who committed to the Braves two weeks ago.
Frings selected Bradley over Northern Iowa, Ball State, Miami (OH), Princeton and Air Force.
What started out as a Lenten program has grown and we hope it will be a lifelong commitment to helping others.
St. Mary's school students have donated hundreds of lunches for the Franciscan Peacemakers Sandwich drop program over the past few months. The kids were strongly encouraged to make this a family event and not just ask their parents to handle the details.
Thanks to all the students and families who have taken the time to donate to the less fortunate in our community.
And a special thanks to our 6th Grade Girl Scout Troop for making 50 lunches one month! Way to go ladies!
Anyone interested in participating should check the St. Mary's bulletin for dates and times.
In the Sunday, April 19th Journal Sentinel, columnist Laurel Walker featured St. Mary's Newman family in her column. Check it out here: http://www.jsonline.com/news/waukesha/43134082.html
Also, congratualtions to school parent Randy Newman on his recent election as Village Board president in Menomonee Falls!

Dear Mrs. Borremans, I just wanted to let you know how excited Olivia was to participate in mass this morning. Thank you for letting her have that opportunity. You have made her transition to school such a wonderful experience. I can't thank you enough for all the knowledge and values you share with her every day. Mass was also a great experience for me. It is sometimes difficult to juggle things when working full time - but it was so worth making the time for! Watching all the kids participate was heartwarming and just again reinforces that we made the right decision in sending her to St. Mary's.
Technology and our 5th graders:
From sea-to-shining-sea, studying the states has never been so spectacular! Using their new SMART Boards, Mr. Kelm’s Fifth Grade students took up the challenge of matching state names and locations on the super-sized U.S. map. With a touch of their fingers, the students dragged and dropped state names into place on the SMART Board display. Classmates cheered as students attempted to ‘beat the clock’ and name every state in the lower forty-eight.
Technology and our 2nd graders:
Making predictions, studying patterns, and counting money...all standard subject matter in a 2nd Grade classroom. In Mrs. Harbury’s class, all of these topics jumped off the board as students jumped at the chance to use the SMART Board in Room 116. Students learned about chance and random choices using a “virtual spinner”. After each spin, a histogram of results was created real-time, allowing the class to evaluate their predictions based on the data displayed.
