For more than 75 years, Easter Seals Southeast WI has been offering help and hope to children and adults living with disabilities, and to the families who love them. Through therapy, training, education and support services, Easter Seals creates life-changing solutions so that people with disabilities can live, learn, work and play.
We are very proud to announce that this June we celebrated the graduation of one of our autism services participants, Kai.
Kai was adopted from an orphanage in China when he was 28 months old. Upon return home with his parents Kai did not walk, speak, or interact with others. After seeing a specialist, Kai’s parents were told their son would be non-verbal and require long-term care. They looked to Easter Seals for help. “Of course I was devastated by the long-term prognosis and relieved when our son was accepted into the autism program at Easter Seals. His therapists were all caring, insightful and astute, and worked fantastically with our kiddo! On lead therapists and staff were flexible with our changing schedule and coordinated well with teachers at my son’s school.”
Kai started with our services in September of 2010 and after only nine months he showed amazing progress. The most noticeable change was his speech. Kai went from not speaking to using 75 words in this nine-month period; sentences soon followed. Kai’s ability to communicate this way opened many doors. He developed more meaningful interactions with family and peers and as a result, he had fewer negative outbursts. Reading books and having someone read to him are two interactive activities Kai has learned to enjoy.
Once isolated, Kai now participates socially with his friends. Academically he is on track with spelling, counting, reading, and writing. The games “Trouble,” “Sorry,” “Connect 4,” and “Chinese Checkers” are among those he enjoys playing.
Kai’s parents are thankful for his progress since beginning with the autism program in 2010. Functioning at an age appropriate level he no longer needs special education services. “We are so proud of the accomplishments our son has made with the help of Easter Seals! His future is bright and we are truly grateful!”
Early intervention gave Kai what he needed to succeed, graduating from 4K and his Easter Seals autism program. After a busy summer with family and friends he will be ready for school—right on track—with his peers this fall.
