Don't Touch That Dial

This blog will feature highlights of programming by Falls Cable Access, a not-for-profit organization located in Menomonee Falls High School.

Video Festivals, Conferences and New Technology

The past 60 days have been chaotic and challenging for the Channel 13 & 14 staff.  Challenging because of the conglomeration of events and tasks and chaotic because of...well, the conglomeration of events and tasks.

Starting with the Incredible Trivia contest hosted at the studio, before we could catch our breath we had The National Association of Broadcasters Convention,  The Wisconsin Association of PEG Channels Conference and Video Festival (which we helped plan and run), the end of year reports and taxes in addition to setting up the remote trailer for the spring events, revamping and repairing the lighting grid in the studio and the incorporation of live to air ability for many of our shows.  Oh yea, another dozen shows went on the air.

The NAB conference was targeting 3D in every single aspect. (not in our future at Ch. 14).  We did manage to get quite a bit done with some of our vendors we deal with and I expect that will yield good fruit in the future.

The WAPC Video Festival was a great event as we had several award winners go to the event in Wisconsin Dells to receive their awards.   It was a good opportunity for our local producers to see just what is offered in other communities and how Menomonee Falls fares in the state.

KC Thorson was on hand to receive her Merit Award for What's Cookin'with KC and Gordon Kirchoff accepted his Excellence Award as Captain Bud and was the hit of the night.  Village Voices and FOCUS both won awards and the Access Staff won an Excellence Award for sports programming, an exceptional achievement based on the size of the crew.   Falls Cable Access provided all the graphics and video clips for the big screen in addition to the audio for the evening.  Not many people leave the Ho Chunk Casino with more than they came with but in this case we were paid for our services, so I say we were winners.  From all reports a great time was had by all.

On the move again!

We are gearing up for the new remote season which includes the concerts, parades and sporting events.  The Video Trailer was in storage since December with most of the equipment being used inside for HS sports.  A new set  up and some new graphics options should make for even better programming.

Help!

Even though Menomonee Falls was one of three communities to win 2 Excellence Awards at the WAPC Video Festival (out of 60 stations), we have come to the conclusion that the only way to get better is to lighten the load on the the crew.  By having a larger crew, people can focus on their individual assignments and take it to another level.  If you have an interest in video or photography and would like to be part of a live production, or would just like to learn, we would love to hear from you.  It's a fun and rewarding atmosphere and we welcome new enthusiasts.  Contact Harry at info@fallscableaccess.com for more info.
