Celebrate the Beginning of 2012 with HAWS!

HAWS, adopt, Janboree, polka, bowling, pedicures, Pet First Aid

HAWS wishes a healthy, happy New Year to all pets and their people!  Support the “HAWS cause” through festive events and fun learning opportunities during the entire month of January.

Cool Your Paws at HAWS on January 21st from 11:00am – 3:00pm, when HAWS joins Janboree – Waukesha County’s family-friendly winter fest. At 11:30am learn cooking for pets at “K9 Cuisine with Dr. Claudeen.” Take a dogsled ride around the HAWS’ grounds with Executive Director Lynn’s team from Noon – 2:30pm (sign-up begins at 11:30am, first-come/first-served, weather permitting, $5/run). Games and contests for pets and kids will run throughout the day; treats and hot cocoa will be served. Enter the raffle for a 36” LCD TV (donated by Subaru City), a pet-themed fire pit or a February dogsled adventure – tickets are on sale now for $5 each or 5 tickets for $20 (need not be present to win). All the details are at hawspets.org.

The Friends of HAWS present Oom-Pa Paws, the Polka Party for HAWS on Saturday, January 28th from 7:00pm – midnight at Saxe’s in Genesee/Wales. Enjoy music from Carol & the Keynotes, snack on chili and cookies and keep your New Year’s resolution to exercise, all in support of HAWS! Admission is $20/advance, $30/door.  Plus, the annual HAWS for Paws Bowl is Sunday, January 29th from 11:00am – 2:00pm at Fracaro’s Lanes in Waukesha. Only $15/person includes 3 games and shoe rental; special rates available for teams of 4-6. Everyone welcome! More details at hawspets.org.

Highlights from HAWS’ busy January Calendar:
- Small Animal Pedicures are available January 11th at Pet Supplies Plus, Brookfield, from 6:00 – 7:00pm, and at HAWS on January 21st from 9:30 – 10:30am. Free – donations welcome!
Cat Pedicures will be available at HAWS on January 14th from 9:30-10:30am for a $7 donation/cat.
- Two First Aid for Pets sessions will be offered, on January 14th and 28th, both from 1:00 – 4:00pm. Details and registration are available by calling 262-879-0165.

By the way - a few seasonal reminders for pet owners:  As of January 1st, all dogs and many cats are required by law to have an updated license. Each municipality is different – owners should check with their city/town/village for details. Keep pets safely indoors when the temperature dips, other than for short walks and potty breaks. Clean salt off sensitive paw pads, check ears for frostbite, and have your short-coated dog wear a coat or sweater when outdoors.  Store poisonous antifreeze out of reach, and, if your vehicle is outdoors, be sure to bang the hood to scare away any hidden animals before starting your engine.

Just A Pound Or Two

This morning when I stepped on the batrhroom scale it groaned more than usual.  So after a hearty breakfast of fruitloops and coffee I decided that it is time to shed a few pounds.

Proper diet is the key, I thought. And,I ended up on a website that claims to be known internationally as the pre-eminent manufacturer of excipient-free, premier quality nutraceutical formulations, super food concentrates and the world's first producer of quantum cellular response products that are capable of restoring quantum coherence to the body's inherent biofeedback.

12 Scams to Watch for in 2012

phishing, legal_scams, job_scams, timeshares, pre-paid_debit_cards, sweepstakes, check_scams, contractor_scams, mortgage_scams, BBB, Wisconsin_BBB

The Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin investigates fraud reports throughout the year and reveals twelve of the newest and/or most common scams that consumers should avoid in 2012.

  • BBB Phishing Frustrations: Businesses and organizations around the country are receiving fraudulent complaint emails from scammers who are abusing BBB's name and reputation.
  • Mortgage Relief Misleaders: Homeowners are tricked into paying large upfront fees for mortgage relief services and then companies disappear abruptly.
  • Hotel Hoaxes: Hotel guests receive calls in their rooms - often late at night - claiming that front desk computers have crashed and credit card numbers are needed again; victims provide information, but callers are not hotel employees.
  • Cheating Contractors: Homeowners are left with little recourse after door-to-door repairmen promise incredible deals, require large upfront fees and then skip out before completing work.
  • Check cashing cons: Sellers receive checks for more than items are worth and are instructed to wire excess money back. Checks later bounce and victims are responsible for lost funds.
  • Social Media Scams: Victims are sent "popular" viral videos on social networking sites, but must upgrade software to view files. Downloads may install malware or viruses that place victims at risk for identity theft.
  • Swindling Sweepstakes: Consumers who did not enter sweepstakes or foreign lotteries are informed that they have won large sums of money or other prizes and must pay smaller sums in order to collect; payments are made and nothing is received.
  • Canine Cons: Scammers set up a fake website selling non-existent puppies for rock-bottom prices. Victims wire money to the so-called seller, but never receive their puppy.
  • Pay the Con Artist Using Pre-Paid Debit Cards. Since consumers are getting wise to wiring money or fake checks, many scammers now prefer to be paid using untraceable, pre-paid debit cards.
  • Timeshare Shams: In this tough real estate market, timeshare sellers should beware of companies that claim to already have a buyer and want upfront fees.
  • Job Scams: Scammers are working overtime to take advantage of the high number of people looking for jobs, especially online.
  • Lousy Legal Advice: Some scammers are offering low-cost legal advice, but don't have any legal qualifications. The only problem? The consumer may end up in even more legal trouble.

Report scams to BBB through Scam Source at bbb.org/scam-source. To find reputable businesses, visit bbb.org/find-business-reviews. Consumers can also receive news alerts from the Wisconsin BBB by following us on Twitter or liking us on Facebook.

HAWS and World Spay Day 2012

HAWS, spay, neuter, spay-neuter, SNIP, World Spay Day 2012, pet overpopulation

World Spay Day is Tuesday, February 28 - one month from today.  HAWS is getting involved in a big way!

We are asking YOU to help us save countless lives through our spay-neuter program (SNIP) efforts.  We KNOW spay-neuter works - we've seen an almost 20% reduction in the number of stray kittens/cats coming into our shelter since 2005.  A few more years of concentrated efforts - in particular with outdoor/barn cats - and we'll be close to seeing and end to pet overpopulation!

How can YOU get involved?

Sponsor-A-Spay
A donation as little as $30 can neuter a cat, $75 can spay a dog.  Amounts above that can help us provide spay/neuter procedures to those in need, including our own shelter pets, local rescue groups, low income households, those with outdoor/barn cat groups and more.  Any and every donation can make a difference, so click on over to our SNIP webpage and donate today!

Buy a T-shirt
HAWS is selling limited edition World Spay Day 2012 t-shirts.  Your purchase of one of these t's not only supports our spay-neuter efforts, it also proclaims loudly to all who see your shirt the importance of spaying and neutering our companion animals.  They're a beautiful blue and only $15..while they last!

Enter the Pet Photo Contest
HSUS, the parent organization of World Spay Day, is holding an online pet photo contest - when you enter your pet you can select HAWS as your charity of choice, and then all the votes your pet receives in the contest mean a donation to HAWS!  You can win some amazing prizes, too...so show off your best friend and help the HAWS cause at the same time.

By the way - in association with World Spay Day, HAWS is providing free spay-neuter surgeries to target groups - those with cats, kittens, Pitbulls and Pit mixes.  Do you need spay-neuter assistance foryour pets or outdoor/barn cat populations?  Contact HAWS' SNIP clinic for information on available programs at 262-542-8851, x109.
