What is the origin of that word?

Seeing a picture of Joann Kreimendahl in Menomonee Falls Now recently reminded me of a moment  more than twenty years ago.  I was chatting with Joann before a meeting at Village Hall, and found out that we were both followers of a column named Words, Wit and Wisdom.

The column was a regular feature in the Green Sheet, and has long since disappeared.  It presented the meaning  and origin of various words in common and not-so-common usage.

Declare Your Beer Independence

Last month I had the opportunity to attend the National Craft Brewer's Conference in Boston.  It was a collection of brewers, beer wholesalers, brewery reps, beer writers beer product suppliers(wheat, hops, containers, yeast).  It was a great opportunity to be with other beer people to discuss the issues of the industry.

May 11-17 will be American Craft Beer Week, a national celebration highlighting the culture and contributions of craft beer.  Julia Herz ,spokesperson for the Brewers Association quotes:"Today, 97% of the more than 1,500 U.S. breweries are small and independent craft brewers.  American Craft Beer week is a time to celebrate everyting these breweries contribute to our country and culture, and to also celebrate the diversity of beer styles and brands availible today."

Can you feed baby birds this summer?

Volunteers are needed to help feed and care for orphaned wild birds in the wildlife nursery at the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center from May through September. This is a great opportunity for individuals to learn about urban wildlife and help save the lives of baby animals.

Responsibilities include feeding baby birds, preparing food and cleaning cages.  Volunteers must be at least 13 years old to work without a guardian, or 12 years old with an adult guardian.  No previous animal handling experience is required.  The time commitment is one day per week for three hours.  Four different shifts are available between 8am and 9pm, seven days a week.  This is a great experience to help save local wildlife and build great relationships with other animal lovers! Upcoming orientations will be held on Sunday, May 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday, May 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Orphans Danny and Annie

Danny Gokey isn’t the only Danny worthy of attention today!
The Ozaukee Humane Society, sister shelter of WHS, is beginning to see a lot of orphaned kittens – just in time for Mother’s Day, ironically. Read about the adorable orphans, Danny and Annie, who are currently being treated at the shelter. You can donate to help OHS cover the cost of not only their care, but the hundreds of other sick orphans they expect to see this season.  You can even give a donation in honor of your mom for Mother’s Day!  Click here for info.   OHS is located at 2073 Highway W in Grafton.  Call 262-377-7580 or go to for general adoption information.

I've changed

family, just because, national geographic

Over the last year I've changed. I'm not the same person that I was in 2008 and it all started when I picked up a copy of National Geographic's Green Guide, which they have since discontinued in the magazine format.

I used to recycle, but not nearly to the extent that I do now. I'm constantly scrutinizing what my family is throwing away, and if it can be recycled you can bet that it's in that huge recycle bin that the Village of Menomonee Falls delivered last summer. I remember talking with someone about it at my rummage sale last summer, this man was positive he'd never fill that bin. Let me tell you this: I fill that bin. All the time.

Hootie Who?

neighborhood, birds

This morning I was walking my dogs and I noticed a very large thing in the trees across the street from my house. When I got to the right angle I could see that it was an owl, a very large owl, and it was perched at the tippy tippy top of the branches. This afternoon when I came home it was there again, and so I grabbed my camera and by the time I came outside it had flown away.

A few hours later my daughter and I were taking the dogs for their afternoon walk when we saw the owl again, and this time it was sitting on the edge of a very large nest. I had wondered all winter long if it was actually a nest or if was a large clump of leaves that was lodged in the web of branches. This nest is huge, I’d guess about the size of a wok. I suppose if you are a large owl you’d need a large nest though.

Ignorance Is Not Bliss

It was a dark and stormy night. (Sorry about that.) The wind was swirling and the lightning flashed.
I was on the phone talking with my son in Albuquerque when it happened.

The power flickered a bit, dimmed, came up bright and then there was total darkness.  My wireless phone connection was instantly lost, and I began searching for a flashlight.

Hardest and saddest day of my career

The only thing remarkable about the two photos you see here is that they're both in focus. And I use an autofocus, so that's not saying much.
