Smart Ways to Love Pets

Consumer Reports, adopt, save, pets, HAWS

Adopt 4 Paws from HAWSWe received the latest issue of Consumer Reports magazine at our home late last week, and I was intrigued by the feature on the cover.  It teased "6 Ways to Save on Your Pet"!  So, I obediently turned to page 30 as the cover blurb suggested.  (I'm good with "sit" and "stay," too, but that's another story...)

While the article concentrated on cost savings for things like food (didn't agree with all of their logic here - cheapest isn't always best) and health care (shopping around for the right vet for your pet and checking on less expensive options for meds - both good ideas), I was pleased to see how much effort they put into promoting animal shelters just like HAWS.

"Save a pet and save money" was the caption to one item that showed an ADORABLE kitten - housed at a shelter near the magazine's production offices.  Their thoughts?  Consider getting your pet from an animal shelter or rescue group, therby doing a good deed while getting "a good deal."  They're right!  HAWS adoption fees are set to simply cover the cost of care, spay-neuter and housing while the animal is staying with us.  HAWS, like most other animal shelters, takes the "non-profit" label seriously...and usually breaking even is the budgetary goal.  More important to us is helping a homeless animal find it's forever home - whatever that takes.

So thank you, Consumer Reports, for promoting shelters.  We appreciate the shout out for what we do!  They also noted that there is no such thing as a "free" kitten or puppy.  Something to always keep in mind as a pet owner or prospective pet owner...

By the way - summer vacation means busy, busy times at HAWSKids 'N Critters Day Camps are in full swing, our Mobile Adoption Center is appearing almost everywhere...and we have PLENTY of animals available for adoption.  How are you going to spend your summer vacation?  With HAWS, of course!

Little Critters Need Pampering, Too!

HAWS, cats, small animals, rabbits, guinea pigs, pedicures, shelter

Did you know that HAWS does small animal pedicures twice a month?

Volunteers are available at the HAWS shelter this Saturday, July 16th, from 9:30 - 10:30 am to help with a sometimes daunting task - trimming the nails of your rabbit or guinea pig (or other small and furry creature).  The volunteers can also give you pointers on how to do it yourself...if you're up for it!

Typically our volunteer "pedicurists" are available one of the mid-month Saturdays in the morning.  Check our website calendar for the exact dates each month, or give us a call at 262-542-8851.  The next at-HAWS small animal pedicure date is August 20th.

HAWS' volunteers also set up shop at Pet Supplies Plus on Bluemound Road in Brookfield, once each month, usually the 2nd Wednesday evening, from 6:00 - 7:00 pm.  They'll be there tonight, July 13th, and are scheduled for August 10th, September 14th and so on.

There are only 2 things you need to know beforehand:

1.  Make sure your little pet friend is in a carrier when you bring him/her for the pedicure.  It is for their comfort and safety.

2.  This service is FREE!  But, donations to HAWS' small animal fund are always appreciated.

By the way - we've started doing Cat Pedicures at HAWS, too!  Bring your feline friend(s) to HAWS (in a carrier, of course!) on the second Saturday of each month between 9:30 - 10:30 am for claw trims.  We'll even show you tips on how to try this at home!  A suggested donation of $7/cat is much appreciated.

One Dollar Coins

Last night on the Nightly News I watched a story about how billions of one dollar coins have been minted and waiting to be put into circulation.  The problem is that the general public doesn't care to use them because they are heavy and don't fit into a billfold.

Day by day the government cranks them out only to be shipped into warehouses for storage.  New  warehouses are very expensive and must be maintained.  The coins cost the government about 33 cents each to manufacture.

Heat Advisory - Tips for Your Pet's Safety

HAWS, heat, adopt, mini-golf, heat stress in pets

With the onset of a historic heat wave in Southeastern Wisconsin, HAWS reminds pet owners of the dangers of heat for their best friends.

Thanks to PETIE from Georgia for this great pic of Uga, the U of Georgia mascot!Never leave pets unattended in your parked car.
The temperature inside a car, even with windows open slightly, can quickly reach deadly levels. In sunlight temps can rise more than 30 degrees per minute.

In extreme conditions such as these, pets should remain indoors in a climate controlled environment.  When pets must be outside, make sure he or she has protection from heat and sun (a dog house does not provide relief from heat) and plenty of fresh, cool water.  Heat stroke can be fatal for pets as well as people. Exercise your pets in the early morning or evening hours. Watch for hot asphalt which can burn sensitive pet paws.

It's important to be able to identify the symptoms of heat stress in your pet:  heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid heartbeat, restlessness, excessive thirst, lethargy, and vomiting are some of the more common signs.  Move the animal into the shade or an air-conditioned area, apply cold towels to the head, neck, and chest or run cool (not cold) water over the affected pet.  Let the pet drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes.  When in doubt, always contact your veterinarian.

“Residents with concerns about a pet in their neighborhood should contact the Waukesha County Humane Officers at 262-896-8300,” notes HAWS Executive Director Lynn Olenik.  Owners who are concerned about their ability to keep their companion pets safe during this weather are encouraged to call HAWS at 262-542-8851 to discuss available alternatives.

By the way - we have some HOT specials at HAWS this summer!  Purchase your tickets at HAWS for the WI K9 Sport Show (August 27-28 at the Waukesha Expo Center), and HAWS receives a $1 donation per ticket!  And don't forget:  you can still participate in our "2-fer" - adopt a pair of adult bonded cats for $22.22 and receive a two-tally awesome gift basket.

Summer Sausage

Here we are hip deep in summer. The days, these days, pass like a flipbook with barely two memories to rub together. It goes too fast and sometimes the memories of the past, though often unreliable, offer a cool fresh breeze.

There was a time, a wonderful time, when newspapers were the size of tablecloths and milkmen roamed the streets freely. I’ll take a pound of Lambrecht’s, thank you. That might be just me, but I’m willing to gamble there are a few other nostalgic saps out there. Every time and season has its cast of characters, its hooves and hoof prints, the smug and the struggling woven together and then unraveled into statistics and allegiances. We ignore the inexorable truth at our peril. We’re all in this together like the ingredients of a fine summer sausage. The next time you buy one, think of your community.

Reggie Says: "Support the HAWS Cause!"

HAWS, billboard, adopt, donate, paws, rescue, learn

Reggie wants you!Maybe you've been driving westbound on Capitol Drive in Pewaukee lately, just east of the Hwy. 74 interchange, and it has caught your eye...

Or you happened to exit 894 to head west on Greenfield Ave. and there he was...

Introducing Reggie, a recent HAWS alumni pet and the star of our new billboard campaign!

One of our goals is to increase community awareness of our mission - and just our existence in general.  We're hoping that Reggie's cute, smiling mug on our billboards will be just the ticket to get noticed and get our message out there.

The call to action on our billboards is simple:  Adopt - Learn - Give:  Support the HAWS Cause!

Community support is what has kept us strong all these years, through the good and not-so-good, through tough economic times and the changing nature of animal welfare.  Support is given in so many ways...not just financial (altho that one is a HUGE help!).  We receive daily support from our volunteers, a mental boost from those passionate about education and learning, and satisfaction from all those rescue "tails" shared by our adopters.

So keep an eye out for Reggie, point him out to your friends...and please do as he says!

Thank you - from all the paws and claws at HAWS.

By the way - follow the links above to fulfill Reggie's request:   Adopt, Learn and Give!  And say hi next time you see our Mobile Adoption Center out and about...or c'mon out to one of our events or seminars!

BBB Tips for the Wisconsin State Fair

Join the Wisconsin BBB at the Wisconsin State Fair - Booth #819 in the Expo Center

The Wisconsin State Fair begins next week. Some people go to the State Fair to eat something deep-fried and on a stick, others go to get up close and personal with farm animals (perhaps some that they'd never get a chance to see otherwise), some head straight to the Midway for the rides, while others go to shop. If you're in the latter category, please read on.
