All in the Family

The family pet is just that – family.  They are such an integral part of our lives that often we don’t know what we’d do without them.  Here at HAWS we daily celebrate pets and their people, the bond forged between us, and the importance of pets to our community.

Children who have pets in their lives learn greater responsibility and compassion for living things all around them.  Seniors with pets are shown to have lower blood pressure, decreased stress levels, and are more physically active and engaged in daily life.  And, single adults know that pets are a great way to meet people!

In their honor we present the Top 10 Reasons the Family Pet is TRULY "Family."

10. In these cost-cutting times, walking the dog is cheaper than a gym membership.

Summer Zips By...Again!

Well it seemed like we were just getting ready for the Memorial Day Parade and now we are trying to prepare the studio for the High School students Fall Semester.  Why is it every year, when the sun shines the longest, time goes by so fast.  Well I think the obvious answer is, we are busier.  We take on more because the weather allows it, we rise earlier and retire later, and there is nothing on TV.  Except for Cable Access that is.  As mentioned in our last post, we had an extremely busy July 2nd and 3rd.  Just to review all went well and all 3 programs were on the air for the weekend (Concert in the Park, High School Baseball and July 4th Parade.)  There was one hitch in that the boys baseball game was a thriller and after the Falls nine scored 5 runs in the last 2 innings to tie the game, it went a couple of extra innings.  We were behind schedule to get over to the parade route so our largest crew ever for a sporting event, grabbed all the cables, camera and equipment that was not being used for the parade and literally threw it into my van.  Needless to say I spent all of the morning of the Fourth, cleaning and wrapping cables, separating camera and tripods and getting everything back into it's cases.  I finished just in time for the company to arrive.  All in all, it was three very good programs made possible by the remote trailer and some great volunteers.

Size Is Only Relative

Until recently I was quite proud of myself.  I have successfully operated a business which grew nicely for the past quarter century.  I was content to retire and gloat about my accomplishments and the size of the company that I passed on.

The other day I got an e-mail from my financial advisor.  It took the wind out of my sails.  Here is what he wrote:

Using the Flash Pass Gold at Six Flags Great America is the only way to go

six flags great america

On Saturday we went to Six Flags Great America. It was the first time we've been there in about 10 years. Both my husband and I had memories of standing in line for hours to ride a roller coaster, so this time we opted for the Flash Pass Gold. Personally, I was a little worried about that choice, especially considering how much we had to pay for it.

Bugs of Summer Last into Fall

Here at HAWS we educate our adopters about the importance of using flea and tick repellants and heartworm preventatives for their pets.  Mosquitos spread Heartworm, ticks bring Lyme disease, flea infestations affect not only your pet but your entire house.

More and more it is being recommended that pet owners continue to use these flea/tick/heartworm medications throughout the entire year, to ensure your pet's protection from these pests and often fatal diseases they carry.  And, more and more it is recommended to take these precautions for both dogs AND cats.

We've had a dry summer, but we've still had spells of hot, humid, wet weather - fertile time for mosquitos.  All it takes is one mosquito bite to infect your dog with heartworm.  And it isn't unheard of for a rouge mosquito to be buzzing around in April or October.

So, don't risk it!  You keep your pets safe throughout the year - every way possible!  Contact your veterinarian and ask them about flea, tick and heartworm meds ASAP.

By the way - on Saturday, August 22nd we're co-sponsors of the 2nd Annual Menomonee Falls Pet Fair!  This day-log event for pets and their people features pet demos, vendors, prizes, merchandise, food and so much more.  And, this year, donate a bag of pet food to HAWS and you'll receive a FREE 5x7 portrait of your pet.  We'll see you there - stop by and say hello to our Mobile Adoptions staff, and see who we brought along...!

Economy and beer

An interesting article came across my desk today.  The article discusses the growth of the craft beer as the new cocktail since consumers are choosing craft beers over wine and spirits during this recession.  Numbers released yesterday by the Brewers Association show that craft beer grew by 5% in the first 6 months of 2009.  That is borderline amazing considering the beer industry is flat for 2009.

I believe this trend holds thru for the state of Wisconsin as well.  Local craft brewers in the state are showing good numbers for the year so far and are continuing to roll out new products for their consumers.  Lakefront, Leinenkugel's, Capital, Point, New Glarus,Tyranena and Ale Asylum have all introduced new products this year and are enjoying the fruits of their labors.

Class a Habit for Falls' Dekoning on Bad Days as Well as Good

The baseball wasn't so good this summer for former Menomonee Falls three-sport star Doug Dekoning while competing in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League in Long Island, New York, but that didn't dampen his attitude one bit, as the UW-Milwaukee Horizon League All-Conference outfielder and all-around nice person was still grateful for the chance to expand his boundaries.
