Canine Play, Play, PLAY with Dr. Patricia McConnell!

HAWS, adopt, Dr. Patricia McConnell, play, Essential Oils, Pet Fair, Ride for Rover

On Thursday, August 16, at 6:30pm, don't miss the opportunity to join Patricia McConnell at HAWS for an evening talk on Canine Play! Play! Play!

Play is fun, but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s just goofy or frivolous!  Play is powerful stuff, and it has a profound influence on your relationship with your dog.  Learn how play can enhance your relationship with your dog, improve your dog’s responsiveness and provide your dog with the mental and physical exercise they need.  We’ll talk about up-to-date research on how to tell your dog you want to play (most of us aren’t very good at it!), some charming tricks and games to wow your friends, and most importantly, how NOT to play with your dog.  If you'd like a happier, more responsive dog and a closer relationship with each other, then this talk is for you.

The registration fee is $40.00.  Pre-registration is required and is available online or by contacting Khris Erickson, HAWS' Humane Educator, at 262-542-8851, x118.

Patricia McConnell, PhD, a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, (CAAB) has made a lifelong commitment to improving the relationship between people and animals.  She is known worldwide as an expert on canine and feline behavior and dog training, and for her engaging and knowledgeable dog training books, DVDs and seminars.  For 14 years she dispensed advice about behavior problems, and information about animal behavior research, on Wisconsin Public Radio's Calling All Pets, which was heard in over 110 cities around the country.  Dr. McConnell has presented seminars all over the United States and in Canada, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Belgium, Scotland and New Zealand.

Books and DVDs will be available for purchase, and Dr. McConnell will sign books after her talk!  Please join us!

By the way - If you haven't already, check out HAWS' awesome August happenings!  An "Essential Oils" seminar is on the 17th, our Pet Fair and Ride for Rover "merge" on the 18th, Puppy Parties happen every Sunday evening...and our Mobile Adoption Center is all over, bringing happy tails to you!

Adopt 4 Paws from HAWS - Charlie is waiting!

HAWS, adopt, pit bull, Romp the Runway, fundraiser, dog, pets

This special boy is just one of the many awesome pets available for adoption at HAWS!

Meet Charlie, a 7-years-young Pit Bull.  He hasn't been hanging out with us at HAWS for too long...but we didn't need much time at all to fall in love with him.  And pamper him (as evidenced by these pictures)!

Charlie is a well-mannered dog by ANY standards, and would work well in many households.  He's lovable and loving.

Charlie says:
"Just look at my face!!!  I am Charlie and if you are looking for the 'perfect pit'...I am it!  Somehow I managed to wind up here at HAWS.  Don't get me wrong, it's GREAT here, but I am a family dog and deserve the best family ever.  Please read up on my breed and remember lots of people don't get that Pits can be sweet and calm....and that's totally me!  I am good with cats and other dogs and kids are fine, but not ones that are too small.  (I am strong and can knock the little ones over.)  Stop in and see me - I am just the BEST!

HAWS is open 7 days a week for viewing and adoption - what are you waiting for?!?!

By the way - reserve your spot on the runway today!  HAWS fashionable fundraiser, Romp the Runway, is Friday, September 28, from 5:30-8:30pm at Silver Spring Country Club.  A fashion show featuring styles from local boutiques is accompanied by cocktails, appetizers, silent and live auctions and more.  Join us - admission is $75 per person, and VIP tables are available!

EFFECTS FROM PROLONGED DROUGHT ON TREES

Moisture stress on trees affects every physiological process adversely. The first response is the closure of the leaf stomata. This acts as a defense mechanism by reducing the transpiration of water. With the stomata closed, the curtailing of photosynthesis is the result, as carbon dioxide is not absorbed. The stoma is a pore, tiny leaf opening, found in the leaf and stem epidermis (many on each leaf) that is used for gaseous exchange. This reduction in photosynthesis limits the growth and production of carbohydrates (energy) which increases the trees susceptibility to insect pests and disease.

Water stress inhibits the production and translocation of essential materials in the plant, (listed below) and further contributes to the reduced growth and development.

  • ·         Carbohydrate (food) production
  • ·         Proteins
  • ·         Enzymes
  • ·         Growth regulators
  • ·         Mineral nutrients
