Manufacturing Jobs Abound

It is true. Good jobs are available in the manufacturing sector all around our area.  But, companies are having trouble finding people with the skills required for these jobs.

This month, local Chambers of Commerce will be offering the Third Annual Manufacturing Career Expo. (MCE)  On Wednesday Oct.12th and Thursday Oct.13th, the expo will be held at Davian's Conference Center at 16300 W. Silver Spring Drive.

Fashion, Football & (Little) Friends – Its FALL at HAWS!

HAWS, adopt, small animal adoption, football, fashion, Mobile Adoption, events

At HAWS we have a super-busy and fun October planned – highlighted by special fall-themed events and activities.

We “kicked off” the month at Goff House Gallery, 723 Clinton St., Waukesha at the October 1st Art Crawl.  Local artist Thomas Paul Moran did portrait photography of dogs and their owners, with proceeds donated to the shelter.  We're hoping to team up with Thomas again this fall/winter - keep your eyes and ears cocked for more info!

October could be coined the "Month of LIttle Best Friends," with not one but two FREE HAWS’ events this month featuring adoptable small animals.  The “Gerbil Jamboree & Hamster Hoe Down” on Sunday, October 2nd highlighted the many small animals available for adoption at HAWS (still going on is an adoption special - take home a little best friend and get a gift!).  Sunday, October 16th marks our annual Guinea Pig Primer – a day of all things for owners and those wanting to know more about cavies as pets.  Join us from noon – 4:00 p.m.

HAWS’ 2011 fall fundraiser, Fashion for Paws for HAWS, is Friday, October 14, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Silver Spring Country Club.  This cocktails and appetizers event features a runway show with fashions from local shoppes including Boutique B’Lou, Faye’s, Georgie…consignment for her, and Next Door.  Check the event webpage on for details:  Reserve your spot next to the catwalk today for only $75/guest!

HAWS’ Mobile Adoption Center continues the busy season with 2 special football games! The team will be at Arrowhead High School the evening of October 7th for the big game against Waukesha West High School, and then will enjoy the honor of being the Carroll University Homecoming Parade Grand Marshalls on Saturday, October 8th at 1:00 p.m. The following weekend, October 15th - 16th, HAWS and Petco – Waukesha “Team Up” for a community pet adoption event. Many local breed groups and pet vendors will join in the fun at the Shoppes of Fox River on Sunset Drive in Waukesha. Saturday, October 22nd, come to Petco – Greenfield for Wisconsin Pet Care’s “Stuff the Subaru” – help fill a car from HAWS’ business partner, Subaru City, with pet food and supplies for the animals at the shelter. All Mobile visits are detailed at – just click on Upcoming Events!

You can always read all about the latest “HAWS happenings” at  Support the HAWS cause this October!

By the way:  Currently we are running a young-cat adoption special - adopt two of our cats or kittens with a STAR on their info card and the entire adoption fee is only $60!!  Twice as nice for a very sweet price!

On Saturday and Sunday, Petco-Waukesha and HAWS Mobile Adoption Center are co-hosting the "Team Up" event at the Shoppes of Fox River, on Sunset Drive in Waukesha.  Lots of adoptable animals will be on hand, and the people who know them best, to help us "score" points (adoptions), add members to the "go-home" team and help lots of pets "touchdown" at new, forever homes!  Join in the fun from 9am - 2pm on Saturday and 10am - 2pm on Sunday.  Enjoy music, food and drink and find a new best friend!

Buy pink? Not so fast!

If you’re like me, you’ve been watching a lot of football lately and have noticed all of the pink gloves, cleats and other accessories that NFL players have been wearing in October to help promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s hard NOT to notice when a 300-pound football player is wearing hot pink shoes! I applaud the NFL, and hope it makes a lot of money when it auctions off those items – since I know that all of the proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

"Stuff That Subaru" - This Coming Saturday!

HAWS, adopt, donate, pet supplies, Petco, Wish List, Cats Internationals

This weekend HAWS is the beneficiary of a fun and creative supply drive.

This Saturday, October 22nd, come to Petco-Greenfield, 4950 S. 76th Street, and help fill up a vehicle with needed pet supplies for HAWS.  Our business partner, Subaru City of Milwaukee, is providing one of their cars for STUFF THAT SUBARU.

Everything for our paws and claws can be found on our website Wish List, or simply go to Petco on Saturday and they'll provide a list.  They'll even show you exactly what items they have and where they are in the store!  What could be easier?!

So, while you're out running errands and picking up supplies for your own pet(s), stop at the Petco on 76th in Greenfield and shop for HAWS.  Volunteers will be at the store on Saturday from 10am to 4pm, collecting goods and answering questions about our shelter.

Thanks in advance for your support of the HAWS cause!

By the way - coming up on Monday, October 24th, is a great FREE seminar at HAWS, "How to Tame the Tiger in Your House."  Lead by Victoria Papa from Cats International, this class is designed to help us humans better understand cats and why they do what they do.  Special guest Vivian Frawley will also do a feline agility demonstration- how cool is that?!  Pre-registration for this event is required.

Halloween on the Cheap

Wisconsin Better Business Bureau

Whether it’s a last-minute invite to a Halloween party, or just procrastination, coming up with a quick and reasonably-priced Halloween costume can leave one in horror. Come late October, a trip to the store will often lead to all the good costumes being picked over, leaving one with a choice of parading around as last year’s Hollywood blockbuster character, or cobbling together mismatched costume pieces discarded on the shelves.  Even the fun props and fake blood have been snapped up.

Fostering a Sense of Community

Foster care, adopt, pets, HAWS, pet safety

So where do the HAWS pets go that aren't yet ready for adoption?

This week we're sharing office space with puppy Lola.  She's an adorable mixed breed that is just getting over a cold before she heads out to her new forever home.  Lola's status is "In Foster Care" - a pretty special status if you ask me!

HAWS uses foster homes to help care for pets that come to our shelter but are too young to adopt or possibly under the weather.  Our foster homes get litters of weeks-old kittens, young puppies, a cat with a health issue or a dog in need of a little training.  These volunteers keep the animals in their own homes for a temporary time period - HAWS gives them the food and supplies and they give the nurturing and love!

Our network of foster homes needs to expand!  "Kitten" season is still going strong, so many of our foster families are still helping with that.  We also have a few adult pets that are out getting some home-bound TLC, so when a new, needy animal (like Lola) comes in it is often up to our staff members to take them in.  (We're pretty much maxed out on who's available there, too.)

Becoming a foster caregiver is easy - we have you fill out some basic paperwork, and go through a short orientation.  Once you're ready, we give you a call when we have a need - and you can decide how deeply you want to immerse yourself!  Want to just have a dog for a week or so?  Maybe you'd like that litter of 6 kittens that is still bottle feeding?!  However much you can help, we'll take it!  I can speak from experience - it is sometimes exhausting, but always rewarding.  And it's also just downright fun!

Contact HAWS' main number at 262-542-8851 and ask how you can become involved as a foster care giver, or email and we'll get you connected.

By the way - with all the Halloween candy that will be around for the next few weeks, keep an eye on who's sharing it with you.  Fluffy and Fido do better with liver treats than with peanut butter cups, so save yourself a trip to the emergency vet and keep your candy stored safely away from pets.

So, who are you anyway?

This evening I got a phone call from a "Private  Caller" who represented himself as a member of a veterans group in Germantown.

He thanked me for my previous support of the organization and was requesting a monetary donation. I told him that I had not previously donated to them, but he continued that it was within the last year or 30 days or so. I told him that I didn't belive him and prompty hung up.
