Odds & Ends & Kibbles & Bits

fundraiser, shelter, HAWS, adopt, pets, animals, holiday, dine, donate, shop

We're taking a few deep breaths at HAWS before launching into the holiday season.  But we have lots to do and to look forward to...

The Friends of HAWS annual Holiday Bazaar & Bake Sale is this Saturday, November 6th at our shelter.  Shop early for the pets and pet-lovers in your life!  The Bazaar is full of great pet-related and seasonal merchandise, and is also a super place to satisfy your sweet tooth.  Make plans to come by for lunch and do a little browsing and buying to support HAWS.

TTouch for Little Critters will be presented on Sunday, November 7th.  If you have a house rabbit, guinea pig or other small animal in your life, this seminar shows you great ways to promote their well-being and lessen their stress for visits to the vet, groomer, etc.  Come to think of it, we could all use a little de-stressing...

Of COURSE HAWS' Mobile Adoption Center has a busy month planned!  Rub-a-dub all pups in the tub for our Dog Wash at Petlicious Spa on Sunday, November 14th.  Dine out for HAWS at the Pewaukee Applebees on Monday, November 15th.  We'll be joining in the fun for Muskego's Country Christmas when we set up shop at Pet Supplies 'N More on Saturday, November 20th.  Finally, we'll be making "black Friday" a celebration with a holi-day-of-fun at Petco of Waukesha on November 26th.  Throw in stops at Brookfield Square, Petco of Germantown AND Delafield, and a parade appearance or two...well, you can understand why it is called our MOBILE Adoption Center!

Our calendar is filled out with dog training classes and our famous "Keep your Puppy and Your Sanity" seminar (11/14), along with volunteer orientations, the monthly Friends meeting (11/10), little pet pedicures and more.  Two feet or four, paws or claws - HAWS has something for YOU this November!

By the way - we've STILL got lots of kittens available for adoption.  So, now you can adopt a kitten at HAWS...and get the 2nd kitten at no charge!  Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, the first round of vaccinations, wellness exam, microchip I.D.  A great time to enjoy twice the fun at 1/2 the price!

Need to feel good? Take this challenge!

I noticed today that the Menomonee Falls Fire Department is in need of some new firefighters and EMTs.  If you have the time, there is nothing more rewarding to your soul than giving to the community by performing these services.

I spent 18 years volunteering with the Menomonee Falls Fire Depatment and believe me, every bit of time spent was worthwhile.  There is not much more than you can give to your community but  your valuable  time.

A Time to Pause to Honor All Veterans

veterans honor

America has so much to be thankful for in honor of all Veterans who served our wonderful country throughout the course of time with pride, humility and sacrifice to protect the dream of our forefathers to preserve our constitution and freedom.

Unfortunately, too many of our current progressive leaders don't feel that way and will do anything they can to dumb down America out of guilt and redistribution to put us on a level playing field with all countries.

Giving Thanks to Caregivers this November

Easter Seals Adult Day, Waukesha, Chris' Story, LEO Program

Did you know that 45 million Americans, or 21% of the adult population provide unpaid care to an older adult or a person with a disability 18 years or older?  As National Caregiver month winds down, the need for respite and quality services for caregivers and their loved one continue on.

Many Thanks

shelter, donate, fundraiser, pets, kids, adoptable, animals

There is a very cute video on YouTube that shows an Australian Cattle Dog who has learned to bow his head and "Say Grace."  A good reminder that it is time to tally our blessings and give thanks!

At HAWS, we're thankful for...

...Fuzz Therapy!  Where else can you take a break from the stresses of work and cuddle a cat or play with a puppy?  (You don't have to be an employee to do that - just stop by someday.  Or become a volunteer.)

...Caring Kids:  the neat ideas, donations raised and just all-around helpful nature of kids these days is something to behold.  We never get tired of them!

...the HAWS "family":  this includes staff, volunteers, board members, fans, visitors...anyone who supports the HAWS cause and gives us sustenance, a pat on the back and the reassurance that we're doing good.  Waukesha is truly a great community to be a part of!

...Forever Homes:  when a long-time resident of HAWS finally goes home, it is bittersweet - we get very attached to these pets, but we're overjoyed to see them land in such great places.  (This means you, Hannah, Wendall, Lolly, Cadance, Barnaby, Spoofy, Paco...forever in our hearts!)

...Today:  Each day we walk into our "new" shelter and are greeted with hope and love.  We have lots to do, so let's get to it!

...Tomorrow:  Whatever we don't get done today, we can work at tomorrow.  Whatever pet didn't find their home today, we'll try even harder tomorrow.  We'll be back to fight the good fight as long as it takes.

From all the paws and claws at HAWS - Have a Great Thankgiving, Everyone!

By the way - if you're looking for a shop-portunity this Black Friday, think Black Cats and Black Labs!  Join our Mobile Adoption Center at Petco - Waukesha on Sunset Ave. at 8am and kick of your "howl"-iday season on the right foot, er, paw!

The Need Continues On

Peggy's Story, National Caregiver Month, Easter Seals Adult Day

Caregiving can be rewarding and frustrating, fun and discouraging, heartwarming and heartbreaking.
As National Caregiver month ends this week, the need for respite and quality services for caregivers and their loved one continues on.   See how Peggy found help, hope and answers for her daughter Candy at the  Easter Seals Adult Day Program so she could continue to work and run her business from at home.

For years, Peggy has been trying to find an adult day program for her daughter Candy. Numerous
tries proved unsuccessful since the programs were not adapted to meet Candy’s needs. The results have been that, for the past 10 years, Peggy has been meeting Candy’s daily needs while simultaneously trying to run her childcare business in her home.
