And there are MORE ways to support the HAWS cause throughout the month of December:
Purchase an order of Nachos Navidad® at Taco John’s, 317 N. Grand Ave., Waukesha and 25 cents is donated to HAWS! Donate new/gently used towels and pet toys to HAWS through a drive sponsored by Sitting Dogg – log onto their website,, for item drop-off sites.  Camp Bow Wow – Waukesha will give a free pet bath for pet food donations worth $5 or more – visit their location at 1707 Paramount Ct., Waukesha to take part in this special.

By the way - With winter looming, remember to keep your pets safe from the cold. All pets should stay indoors when the temperature dips, other than for short walks and potty breaks. Clean salt off sensitive paw pads, check ears for frostbite and have short-coated dogs wear a coat or sweater during walks. Make sure outside water dishes have not frozen over. Store poisonous antifreeze out of reach and clean up spills. Bang on outside car hoods to scare away any hidden animals before starting your vehicle’s engine. Make it a happy holiday season for all!

More Ways to Have a HAWS-y Holiday

Holidays, christmas, pets, donate, gifts, rescue, shelter, adopt

Give a gift that gives back this season! Here are some great ways to help the ‘HAWS cause’ while you celebrate the Holidays in 2010.  For all the details, click, call 262-542-8851 or visit us at 701 Northview Rd., Waukesha - 7 days a week!

Gifts for Pets …AND Their People!
HAWS has a great selection of pet toys and accessories, ranging from 50 cents to $15, for cats, dogs and small animals all!  They are all on display in our shelter lobby for easy shopping.

Show your HAWS pride with our “single paw” and “4 Paws” clothing for all ages ($10-$40) in a wide variety of colors and all sizes. Give your kids a Personalized Pet Book ($3 goes to HAWS) or the Fur-Ever Home” board game ($5 donated to HAWS). Make plans to celebrate your child’s next birthday with a party at HAWS ($200-250), or send them to Kids ‘N Critters Summer or Winter Day Camp ($75 and up).

From Pet First Aid kits ($15) to seminars and training classes (Free - $80)…you’ll both be ready for anything!

Donations Give a “Warm & Fuzzy” Feeling
HAWS Holiday Gifts of Love donations can be made in any amount, and in honor of your favorite person or pet! We’ll even include a picture on our lobby’s Holiday Tribute Tree.

Sponsor-A-Pet through our shelter partner, Log onto our Pet Showcase, pick a pet and click on “Sponsor Me” within their profile.

Give a Membership, either Annual or montly/Sustaining, and help make a difference EVERY DAY for the HAWS pets!

Tribute Paver Bricks and Tiles are a lasting legacy of caring…and can be viewed for years to come at our shelter by the recipient.
By the way - Pets themselves really don't make the best holiday gifts.  A new pet during an already stressful time can spell disaster for all involved.  Instead, use this family time to learn what pet is best for you, shop for your new pet and prepare your home.  Then, when the holidays are over, stop by our shelter and bring home your best friend...for the New Year!  Now THAT'S a great resolution.

Holiday Notes

With the holidays fast approaching I just wanted to take a minute and review some items to remember for hosting parties and celebrating.

1. Know your limits and be in control of your surroundings- space your drinks or alternating between non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages.

Random Acts of Kindness

random acts of kindness

Simple random acts of kindness are especially contagious – you do something nice for someone, and it sets the mood for that person to carry that kindness forward to another person.  And so on… And so on... And so on…

I was in the store about a month or so ago, and grocery bill for the gentleman in front of me came to $20.03. He had a $20 bill in his hand, and started to fumble in his pocket for an additional 3-cents, only to find that all he had was another $20 bill. The cashier looked at him with a look of “don’t you have a smaller bill?” and he looked back apologetically.

I'm Finally Getting It.

...the Christmas spirit, that is.   Ever since before Thanksgiving I have slowly turned into an old grouch.  All the hubbub of shopping, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the shouts of "hurry for those last-minute gifts" really turns me off.

My sweetheart wife addressed all our Christmas cards this year and I thank her.  On the other hand she spends much more time than necessary baking cookies, decorating, wrapping gifts, and planning meals.

Pets are a Gift, but Not as Gifts!

adopt, animals, awareness, christmas, donate, gift, HAWS, humane society, pets, rescue, shelter

I had a rather shocking encounter with a relative over Christmas this year that really got me thinking.

Being that I've been an employee of HAWS for more than a dozen years, my family and friends long ago got used to my pro-animal welfare mantras and viewpoint.  What a surprise, then, when one of them told me that they "were worried I was going to bring the kids a dog as a present this Christmas."

I think my jaw is still on the floor.  Dumbfounded.  Speechless.

HAWS, along with most rescues, strongly discourages the giving of pets as gifts for any occasion.  In fact, it is an item on our application and is discussed during adoption counseling.  A pet is a life that requires a lifetime commitment - it isn't a token, or a plaything to get bored with, or a trendy accessory - too often that is the way a gift is viewed.

Personally I believe very much in the importance of the no-pets-as-gifts policy, because I have seen first hand the number of animals that have been surrendered to HAWS because they were unwanted gifts.  (If a person wants a pet, they should be part of the process of choosing that pet - their responsibility, their choice.  Its only fair.  Besides, who wants someone else picking their best friend for them?  Chemistry is important in human-pet relationships, too.)

Not to mention, an employee of HAWS could very well be in jeopardy of losing their job if they participated in the giving of a pet as a gift.  (See #2 and the number of surrenders...that is not a good way to ensure job security.)

Doing my best not to get on people's nerves or be preachy, maybe I haven't talked about this concept, let alone other animal welfare issues, strongly enough?  Maybe it is okay to turn more moments with family and friends into "teaching moments."

I encourage everyone to have discussions - with family, friends, co-workers - about animal welfare issues.  Working together we can all help HAWS achieve our goal for 2011 and beyond:  using our reach as a humane society to create a whole Society that is Humane!

By the way - even tho the "giving season" is over, the need is not.  We need you to Support the HAWS Cause the whole year through - with supply donations, monetary contributions, your time and talents....  Please stop by the shelter and join us!
