Helo Us Make the First Five CountBelow is a guest Blog written by Bob Glowacki, my CEO at Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin Do you believe every child starts kindergarten ready and able to learn? You might be surprised to know that every year we as a nation fail to identify 1.45 million children under the age of five who are at risk for developmental delays or other disabilities. These are children who enter school with learning and health issues that have a lasting, negative effect on their ability to learn and succeed. One notable example is among children with autism, who are often not diagnosed until school, and lose four years of early optimal treatment. Donors: Be Careful in Wake of 9/11 AnniversarySunday’s anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks is sure to evoke memories, emotion and, for some, philanthropy. The BBB wants to remind people that scammers may take advantage of the anniversary, and that donors should carefully research a charity before they give. A recent Associated Press investigation found that many 9/11 charities “failed miserably” in serving victims, their families and their memories, yet continue to collect donations. This past week, the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs warned that a scammer was calling residents in Northeast Wisconsin fraudulently soliciting donations for a veterans’ clinic in Green Bay. Fair Trade for TanzaniaMark your calendars! Be a Smart RenterThere is a good chance you or a family member is a renter – or will be. Since the housing market bust, nearly 3 million households have become renters, with another 3 million expected by 2015, according to census data analyzed by Harvard’s Joint Center for House Studies and The Associated Press. Thirty-eight million now rent apartments or houses. Difficult timesIt has taken me a while to write about it but here goes...A call came in on my cell on a hot Friday morning. It was a call from a former co-worker. He called to say a mutual friend had died the night before. It did not register for a while because my mind did not want to accept the fact someone I had known and worked with for 10+ years had passed. Ted was a couple of years older but our kids were the same age. This was a sudden and unexpected passing. I have a lot of great memories of traveling with Ted to octoberfest in Munich Germany a few years back with a great group of guys. I have fond memories of grabbing a beer and listening to him tell a story and laughing til my sides hurt. There is an fundraiser event coming up in October for his family. Details will be following soon that I will post here. The fundraiser will be in Milwaukee and will be a tailgate event during a Packer game. It sounds to be the perfect way to remember Ted and to raise money for the family. Together Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin and Marquette High are Tackling AutismJoin Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin and Marquette University High School on Oct. 9 for a free football clinic for children with autism and their siblings. The day of football fun is an opportunity to integrate individuals affected by autism into the community. The inclusion of the individuals and their families will raise awareness for Easter Seals’ autism services. Children with autism, ages 3-18 and their siblings are encouraged to attend. The clinic will be held at Marquette University High School’s football field from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 9. The clinic will include basic football drills such as throwing and catching, trying on the team’s uniforms, and relay races. Staff members of Easter Seals’ autism department will also be available for training and additional support. I got chastised from many of you in the community, especially self professed conservatives. Why do I bring this up?
