Postcards from Around the World

When was the last time you received a postcard in the mail?  It's been years for me, but I remember being delighted by the simple messages and picture of a special place shared by family or friends who were away from home.

I am delighted to share the news of one of Hearts in Unity's newest global partnership with Postcrossing to help connect people all around the world with our orphan and at-risk children in Tanzania.

A Totaly Free College Education

Until recently I spent most of my online time "surfin' the net."  There were so many interesting things to do and people to meet.  The shopping is great, too, there is nothing that you cannot get.

Two months ago I discovered iTunes.  I had overlooked it before because I was happy listening to music from my own collection which has been downloaded to my ipod.  This discovery was a result of purchasing a new Mac from the Apple Store.

Video Festivals, Conferences and New Technology

The past 60 days have been chaotic and challenging for the Channel 13 & 14 staff.  Challenging because of the conglomeration of events and tasks and chaotic because of...well, the conglomeration of events and tasks.

Starting with the Incredible Trivia contest hosted at the studio, before we could catch our breath we had The National Association of Broadcasters Convention,  The Wisconsin Association of PEG Channels Conference and Video Festival (which we helped plan and run), the end of year reports and taxes in addition to setting up the remote trailer for the spring events, revamping and repairing the lighting grid in the studio and the incorporation of live to air ability for many of our shows.  Oh yea, another dozen shows went on the air.

American Craft Beer Week

Next week it is American Craft Beer Week across the US.  It is a national celebration across the US with events at breweries.  It is a growing celebration of all that is craft beers here in the U.S.  On a national basis craft beers were up 7% in 2009 vs 2008.  The numbers were even higher here in Wisconsin.( Detailed numbers are being released next week)

The Brewers association classifies Craft brewers as those that produce  less than 2 million barrels annually.  Wisconsin boast over 70 breweries, brewpubs and microbreweries across the state.  What a great state to live in if you enjoy beer.  In fact if you are still finalizing summer vacation plans, look into a brewery trip for visiting a number of great breweries that each have their own distinct style.

To Pig or Not to Gig That is The Question

Local Issues

The subject of the "Big Pig Gig" is hot again. There is some fine local reporting on the subject from out own local paper  here:

Big concerns raised over Big Pig Gig

I was and am a supporter of this event and am glad they are looking at a revival of the event. The first year was tough, as is any events maiden voyage. Most people, including me, thought there would be lots of food to sample, buy or eat. The second year I was there I didn't recognize anyone from the Falls other than the volunteers and the place was pretty packed with people. They obviously drew from outisde the area. One wonders why more locals wouldn't attend an event in their backyard. Last year the planners took a hiatus to see how it could make money, if they were to resume. Smart.

Trustee Steliga and Former Village President Bob Steliga 9 Years Delinquent on Falls Fest Pledges to Library

library pledge

After a brief break, The Vanguard is pleased to be back on-line covering local issues that are brought to the attention of this blog by many people who are plugged in to what is going on in the Falls.

As is often the case with local governments and their questionable relationships with non-profit groups that are directly or indirectly funded by the taxpayers, promises are made and stories are published about how wonderful the relationship between the two are and the many wonderful things that are being accomplished because of that wonderful relationship(s).

Drinks & Dogs - Enjoy a "Yappy" Hour this Thursday!

adopt, adoptable pets, animals, art, dogs, donate, exhibit, humane society, HAWS, rescue, shelter

Presenting another special event from the HAWS and Waukesha County Museum partnership and "The Nature of Dogs" special photography exhibit...

Join us for  “Cock-Tails Happy Hour” on Thursday, May 27 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. - at the Museum at 101 W. Main St., Waukesha. Pets and their people are both welcome!

Our featured speaker will be animal behaviorist Beth Ament, who will discuss her work and also take questions from cocktail hour guests. Beth is the co-founder and Executive Administrator for the African Predator Conservation Research Organization.  After working in the zoo animal field since 1988 in Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota, Beth obtained her Certified Veterinary Technician certificate and is currently a licensed vet tech.  Unlike most CVT's she has worked on lions about as much as she has dogs and cats!  (Seriously, how cool is THAT?!)

Cock-TAILS guests can compete in an owner/pet look-alike contest (ALWAYS fun!) and a raffle for an autographed copy of The Nature of Dogs exhibit companion book by Mary Ludington. Canine visitors will enjoy “Puppy Petite Fours” treats from event sponsor, Petlicious Dog Bakery & Pet Spa. HAWS’ Mobile Adoption Center will host a meet’n’greet with adoptable animals from the shelter

The $5 advance admission ($10 at the door) includes viewing of The Nature of Dogs special exhibit, the first drink and snacks.

By the way - Museum visitors should also save their admission tickets and bring them to HAWS to be entered in the special Nature of Dogs Raffle Contest. Winners will be drawn on June 13 for prizes such as HAWS gear, restaurant gift certificates, pet goody baskets and more. Enter the raffle for each visit to the exhibit.  And while you're at HAWS...see who's available to be your new best friend!

Memorial Day

The Lake Express

Today I had the pleasure of crossing Lake Michigan on the Lake Express.  This car ferry moves between Milwaukee and Muskegon on somewhat boring trip across the lake.

Ours was a one day round-trip because we were taking a couple of grandkids to Michigan for a family outing.  We left Milwaukee early in the morning  (6 a.m.) and arrived 2-1/2 hours later in Muskegon.  The crew and staff were quite friendly.
