Feeling charitable?

The St. Mary's School annual appeal is underway. We need your support for operational needs. While givers often want to give to something more tangible (like a new computer for a school) think about what "operational needs" means to a school....you're funding teachers who teach kids to read, to spell, to learn math, and to help the family establish a set of values in their children that will carry them into adulthood. So please, find it in your heart to contribute.

Donations may be sent to St. Mary Parish School, N89W16297 Cleveland Ave, Menomonee Falls, 53051.

scams, scam, BBB, Better_Business_Bureau, veterans, military_personnel

by Susan Bach
Wisconsin Better Business Bureau

My father was a Navy veteran who landed on Normandy Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Even though he’s no longer with us, I don’t like to see or hear about a scammer taking advantage of any veteran or active duty military personnel.

$18,000,000 Falls Taxpayer Funded Radisson Hotel Appears to be in Receivership Per Judge's Order

Solyndra and Radisson Menomonee Falls Corruption

Solyndra Syndrome Hits Menomonee Falls Hard

Similar to the recently much covered Solyndra Solar Panel Company story out of California (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-09-18/news/ct-met-kass-0918-20110918_1_solyndra-loan-guarantee-obama-fundraisers-obama-white-house) involving corruption at the highest levels of the federal government that has taken on the form of bribery, quid-pro-quo, cash payments, fund raising bundling and possible extortion with President Obama, his administration, the Department of Energy, campaign supporters and businesses over a $535,000,000,000 taxpayer loan in 2010 resulting in bankruptcy less than a year later, the taxpayer funded hotel and restaurant on Main Street in Menomonee Falls appears to be headed for possible bankruptcy and or foreclosure if bills aren't paid and funds returned to business owners.

Not What They Expected

HAWS, adopt, Mod Squad, party

Wendell is a HAWS alumni and Mod Squad grad! This past Tuesday, HAWS had the pleasure of hosting the monthly Waukesha Business Alliance "Networking After 5."

More than 100 area business people came to our shelter for a few hours of food, fun - and warm fuzzies.  We found out the latter wasn't what some of them had expected!  Over and over again we heard comments that the NA5 attendees didn't know our shelter was so warm and inviting.  They didn't expect the upbeat vibe they received - from both staff and volunteers, and especially from our animal guests.

We've been told we're the best kept secret in Waukesha County - maybe there's some truth to that? Those of us who spend our workdays here, those who come to volunteer and socialize with the pets-in-residence, those who've adopted from us, kids who have come to camp at HAWS, guests at our various seminars/events...they all know we're really quite a fun bunch to hang around with!  Now we just need to make sure EVERYONE knows that.

At HAWS, we strive every day to be the pet-person's resource, a place to learn, a place to experience the joy of a companion animal.  When people visit, they start to realize this isn't "the pound" - nor is it drab, dreary, depressing or antiseptic.  From our yellow, orange and green color-scheme to our loving caretakers to our well-socialized and happy adoptables, you can be sure you're entering a positive place with postivie outcomes.

So, don't be shy, c'mon over and see us - we don't bite, we purr!   And smile, and laugh, and...

By the way - our Mod Squad program is celebrating it's 2nd birthday, and you're invited to attend the party!  (See what I mean about upbeat - 2 parties in one week!)  Stop by HAWS between 2:30-4:00pm on Sunday to meet Mod Squad volunteers, learn about this important program within our Behavior Department...and have some cake!

Giving Thanks for the Giving Season

HAWS, adopt, learn, give, donate, holidays, fundraising, appeal

HAWS annual holiday appeal has already reached mailboxes in our community.  This fundraiser gives us a chance to tell of the many great successes we have during the year.  This year our story features Fred.

Fred is the poster child for all HAWS does for the animals of our community.

This vibrant young Shepherd/Lab mix was surrendered to HAWS due to a household move. Returned after his first adoption, Fred was found to have some very interesting habits – in particular, he had a compulstion to eat everything in sight! This made for some dramatic days at HAWS.

Fred received emergency surgery from the staff at the Veterinary Referral Center, our community partner, paid for by Annie’s Medical Fund. HAWS’ Caretakers gave him daily TLC including a diet of sweet potatoes, olive oil and Essfacid supplements. He spent one-on-one time with a loving foster care family to complete his recovery. Once back at HAWS, Fred participated in Camp Gone to the Dogs through our Education Department, learning basic skills from the kids in camp – and widening his circle of friends since he was such a willing student! The Adoptions staff made sure prospective new homes heard all about his activities (including training with the Mod Squad™), and once the right home came along HAWS’ Behavior Department consulted both before and after his adoption to assist with his transition.

Fred just wanted to be loved and cared for…but he also needed structure, attention and guidance – all of which HAWS offers through the teamwork of our Animal Care staff, SNIP clinic/vet techs, Behavior Department, Education Department, Adoptions staff, Community partners and volunteers.

All is well with Fred: He is now called Duke, and even has his own Duchess – a sister to romp and play with. His new family reports Duke has a heart of gold and is an incredible companion. He is obedient and eager-to-please!

Just like Fred, dozens of dogs, cats, small animals and their owners look to HAWS each year for help. YOUR support allows us to offer so much to them! HAWS gives care and training to our in-house pets to ensure the best possible adoption. HAWS provides spay-neuter services for shelter residents, rescue groups and low-income households. Our Outdoor Owned Cat Program has helped to dramatically curb the population of unwanted cats in our community. And educational opportunities abound – including Kids ‘N Critters camp, Critter Club, K’HAWS, individual behavior consults, free seminars and more…for all members of your family!

WE CAN DO GREAT THINGS – TOGETHER.  Support the HAWS cause - Adopt, Learn, GIVE!

By the way - looking ahead, December is going to be a fantastic month at HAWS.  The Winter Symposium is December 3rd, we're hosting a (human) Blood Drive on the 22nd, Kids 'N Critters Winter Day Camp is December 26-30.  Learn more about all the HAWS happenings here!

Thanksgiving

Hope everyone is finishing up their final plans for Thanksgiving and the menus. Wanted to drop a note about some great beers for the holiday. One of my favorites with Turkey is Newcastle Brown Ale. Great beer to pair with the turkey and the stuffing. Some great seasonals are still availible to pair with your meal. Pumpkin beers from Lakefront and Southern Tier are the best ones I have had this fall.

Chocolate stouts are also a favorite of mine this time of year-a ton of great choices at your local watering hole or retail location. Drop me a note of your favorites and I will repost shortly.
