Dec. 20, 2009 12:18 a.m. | It was the third game of the week for the Germantown girls basketball team, but the formula remained the same against border rival Menomonee Falls Saturday night.
Build a big lead through a sound combination of balanced offense and dominating pressure defense and then take the foot off the gas and let everyone have a chance to play.
The result was a lead that reached 28 at one point as the Warhawks coasted to an historic eighth win in a row with a 52-39 win.
"We're really excited about this," said senior guard Melissa Klemm, who led all scorers with 16. "We're just building confidence everyday. ..We definitely knew that we'd be pretty good, but we weren't sure if it would play out quite like this."
Germantown coach Matt Stuve was hoping to reach the end of the 2009 portion of the season with an unblemished mark.

July 26, 2010 10:12 a.m. | Menomonee Falls officials are encouraging residents and business owners who have had storm damage to report the damage to Waukesha County by calling 211.
Any storm-related debris should be placed out at the curb or shoulder with regular household trash. Waste Management will continue with regularly scheduled weekly garbage pick-up. Due to sheer volume, Waste Management may not be able to collect all of the storm-related debris. The remaining storm-related debris placed along the curb or shoulder will be picked up and disposed of by the village.
Major appliances including dishwashers, water heaters, air conditioners, clothes washers and dryers, freezers, microwaves, refrigerators, stoves, furnaces and dehumidifiers will not be picked up as part of this clean-up. Major appliances may be dropped off at the Orchard Ridge landfill, W124 N9355 Boundary Road. The disposal charge onsite is $15 per appliance.
July 25, 2010 7:22 a.m. | Sixth-seeded Germantown won its third straight tournament game by one run and earned a berth in this week's state finals with a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Menomonee Falls yesterday. We've just posted a photo gallery from that game, a gallery from the Warhawks' sectional semifinal victory over Slinger and a gallery from Falls' semifinal win over Brookfield Central.
The Warhawks' Tyler Thicke pitched a complete game against Falls, allowing only an unearned run. Germantown sophomore outfielder Jimmy Doedens hit a two-run homer in the third inning.
Menomonee Falls advanced to the sectional title game with a 1-0 victory over Brookfield Central. The Indians ended the season at 33-11 and had won 13 consecutive games before falling to Germantown.

July 24, 2010 9:26 p.m. | Eight days ago, at the end of a disappointing, mistake-filled senior night loss to Pius XI, Germantown baseball coach Parrish Wagner talked about the upcoming WIAA playoffs, how the Warhawks would set their pitching up in order to play three games.
An idea that would take them all the way through to the sectional final and a possible trip to the state tournament. A tall order for the sectional's sixth seed with an 11-16 record going into the event and scarcely any momentum behind it.
"But these kids just believe in each other," said one Warhawk parent, shortly after Tyler Thicke pitched the underdog Germantown team to its first state tournament berth since 1986 with a highly unlikely 2-1 win over sectional top seed Menomonee Falls Saturday evening.
"Obviously, its the thing everyone hopes for," said a happy Wagner afterward. "...You'd like to say you saw it coming, but you never know. We had Tyler (an Indiana recruit) built up slowly, playing it safe the entire way and then (sophomore Brian) Keller comes through in the semifinal (a 3-2 eight-inning win over Slinger earlier in the day) which allowed us to save Tyler (for the final)."

July 24, 2010 7:59 p.m. | Germantown got a two-run home run from Jimmy Doedens in the third inning and a six-strikeout, two-walk effort from pitcher Tyler Thicke to upset top-seeded Menomonee Falls, 2-1, in a WIAA sectional final Saturday night in Germantown.
The unlikely win means the sixth-seeded Warhawks (14-16) are headed to the state tournament, which starts in Stevens Point on Wednesday.

July 24, 2010 5:40 p.m. | The Germantown baseball team got an RBI single from catcher Eric Brown in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat Slinger 3-2 this afternoon in a WIAA sectional semifinal in Germantown.
With the win, the Warhawks advance to a sectional final game this evening against Menomonee Falls, with a trip to the state tournament on the line.
Germantown overcame a 2-0 deficit.
Jimmy Doudens hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of seventh to tie score at 2 before Brown came through with the extra-inning heroics.
Germantown got a complete game from sophomore Brian Keller, who at one point retired 15 batters in a row.

July 24, 2010 3:42 p.m. | Menomonee Falls beat Brookfield Central, 1-0, in an old-fashioned pitchers' duel this afternoon at a WIAA sectional semifinal in Germantown.
The Indians scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning in a victory that puts Falls one game away from the state tournament.
Brookfield Central losing pitcher Mike Mierow struck out the first two hitters in the seventh, then Falls designated hitter A.D. Gonzalez ripped a double down the right-field line. Ryan Romens looped a singled down the left-field line that brought home Gonzalez.
Winning pitcher Adam Rubatt allowed five hits and struck out 10. Mierow allowed six hits and struck out six in the loss.
Falls will meet the winner of this afternoon's Germantown-Slinger game in the sectional title game tonight.

July 24, 2010 11:09 a.m. | Today's sectional baseball games at Germantown High School have been postponed to 1, 3 and 5 p.m.
Menomonee Falls takes on Brookfield Central at 1 p.m., followed by Germantown vs. Slinger at 3 p.m. The title game follows at 5 p.m.
The winner advances to the state tournament next week in Stevens Point.

July 23, 2010 4:18 p.m. | Ten municipalities in Milwaukee, Waukesha and Ozaukee counties, in addition to the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, have reported separate sanitary sewer overflows of untreated wastewater to local waterways after Thursday's intense rains, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.
The Milwaukee County communities reporting overflows Thursday include Brown Deer, Fox Point, Milwaukee, Shorewood and Whitefish Bay. Mequon was the only community in Ozaukee County to report an overflow as of Friday.
Waukesha County communities with overflow problems Thursday include Menomonee Falls, Muskego, Brookfield and the Lake Pewaukee Sanitary District, the DNR said in a water systems report Friday.
The metropolitan sewerage district's deep tunnels remained nearly full Friday afternoon so any of the district's regional sanitary sewers with high flows were continuing to spill untreated wastewater into local creeks, rivers and Lake Michigan for a second consecutive evening, district officials said. Combined sanitary and storm sewers in central Milwaukee and eastern Shorewood also were continuing to spill some of their volume as flows remained high Friday.
The mix of sewage and wastewater in the tunnels was being pumped out as quickly as possible and the district's two sewage treatment plants were operating at capacity Friday afternoon, MMSD Executive Director Kevin Shafer said Friday.

July 23, 2010 3:36 p.m. | Lannon Road, north of Lisbon Road (County Highway K) to portions north of Silver Spring Drive (County Highway VV) in Menomonee Falls is closed due to high flood water.
The road is impassable and will remain closed until flooding recedes, Waukesha County officials said this afternoon.
All Waukesha County Park System beaches, including Menomonee Park, are closed today due to high water. They may open Saturday, when heat and humidity are expected to be high. Check out waukeshacountyparks.com for updates.
July 23, 2010 2:43 p.m. | The Germantown WIAA Summer Baseball Sectional - featuring Brookfield Central, Germantown, Menomonee Falls and Slinger - has been moved from today until Saturday because of wet grounds at Germantown High School.
Fourth-seeded Brookfield Central is now scheduled to meet top-seeded Menomonee Falls at noon on Saturday, followed by the game between sixth-seeded Germantown and seventh-seeded Slinger at 2 p.m.
The winners will meet in the championship game, which is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

July 23, 2010 11:16 a.m. | The village of Menomonee Falls has set up a phone bank for residents dealing with problems caused by last night's torrential rains.
Residents can call the Police Department, (262) 532-8861, or Village Hall, (262) 532-4200.
Village Manager Mark Fitzgerald said things have been "reasonably quiet" so far but he expects the call volume to increase throughout the day.
Still, Fitzgerald said the police and fire departments responded to 150 calls from last night through this morning, all of which were weather-related.
He said several of the village's roads remain closed because of standing water, but those closures are "spotty" and tend to be the less-traveled local roads.

July 22, 2010 8:22 p.m. | In Waukesha County, the northeast quadrant of the county was hardest hit at 8 p.m., Waukesha County Communications Supervisor Christine Bannister said.
Hardest hit areas were Menomonee Falls, Lisbon, Sussex, the Merton area, Brookfield and Pewaukee, she said. Numerous roads were closed as the result of flooding.
No tornado touchdowns were reported, but several funnels were sighted in the sky, she said.
"There's storm damage in the entire area - wind, rain and lightning," she said.
Closed roads included several in Sussex. Interstate 94 a mile west of Springdale Road was closed, Bannister said. In Brookfield, 152nd through 148th Streets reported flooding, along with Lisbon Road east of Pilgrim.

July 22, 2010 7:47 p.m. | The intersection of Pilgrim and Lisbon roads is under water and was closed to traffic earlier this evening.
The closure will continue until conditions improve.

July 21, 2010 2:02 p.m. | Menomonee Falls — Menomonee Falls Police are urging residents to lock their cars and keep outside lights on after a rash of car thefts have occurred.
The thefts, which have happened over the past two weeks, have been in the southeast part of the village, south of Good Hope Road and east of Pilgrim Road and usually between 10:30 p.m. and 3 a.m.
All but one of the thefts have been from unlocked cars. Items taken range from loose change to digital media players and GPS units.
According to the police, one or two white males in their late teens have been in the area when the thefts occurred. No further description is available.
Call the Menomonee Falls Police Department (262) 532-1700 to report any suspicious activity.
