The officer involved in the shooting was responding Saturday afternoon to the report of an armed robbery. The Germantown man was trying to flee in a vehicle but crashed, then ran from the scene. Police said that the officer tried to conduct a field interview of the man, but that during the encounter the officer feared for his life and discharged his weapon.

Police said the victim was on probation and wanted on several warrants.

The 39-year-old officer is a 15-year veteran of the Milwaukee force. He has been placed on standard administrative leave. Police did not say why the officer felt threatened.

Highly-touted Falls girls open with 49-32 win over Memorial

Nov. 20, 2012 11:06 p.m. | The expectations are high, the schedule is challenging and the talent pool deep for the Menomonee Falls girls basketball team this season as the Indians got out of the gate with a 49-32 opening game victory at home Tuesday night against Catholic Memorial.

"Yesterday we had our goals meeting and these kids want to go to the (WIAA) state tournament and win the (Greater Metro) conference championship," said veteran Indian coach Craig Amundson. "It's hard to do that stuff, but they believe they can do it."

And with good reason, the Indians will build around senior four-year letterwinners 6-1 Erin Crownover, 5-10 point guard Amber Bullock, and 5-10 swing player Mikayla Robertson.

Add into that mix three-year letterwinners 5-11 junior forward Erin Otzelberger and 6-1 senior forward Monica Carlson and the Indians, who are coming off an 18-5 season in 2011-12, are ready to challenge DSHA and Brookfield Central for the GMC title.

Other experienced hands include 5-8 senior guard Haley Precia and 5-4 junior guard Anna Smalley.

Menomonee Falls Village Board approves budget, slight levy increase

Nov. 20, 2012 6:45 a.m. | The Menomonee Falls Village Board on Monday approved a 0.95 percent increase to the property tax levy for the 2013 budget.

The 2011 tax rate was $5.1947 per $1,000 of assessed value; the 2012 rate has been set at $5.1997 per $1,000 of assessed value. The total levy for the 2013 budget is $21,915,109, which reflects a $205,589 increase, or a 0.947 percent rise from last year's levy of $21,709,520. The 2013 general operating budget also increased 0.9 percent.

Fees and utility rates will remain the same in 2013.

"This year, with very minimal increase in the tax rate, the direct impact to citizens is minimal," said Village Manager Mark Fitzgerald. "We think in this economy, it would have made no sense to do anything radically different."

Since 2006, the total tax increase for a property valued at $250,000 was $29. For homes assessed at $250,000 and less, the 2013 budget reflects a tax increase of about $1.
