High school recognized

for financial literacy

Menomonee Falls — Not long after winning a huge state business competition and placing in two others, Menomonee Falls High School's business department has received another accolade, this one in the form of what it teaches to manage.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is providing a Financial Literacy Innovation Award for $9,220 to the Business Department. The grant represents an increased emphasis by DPI to help schools implement the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards for Personal Financial Literacy.

Business teachers Sara Burling Lisa Kiefer, Michelle Oliver and Jill Hughes will use the money for curriculum materials for the personal finance course.

Throughout the course, students learn money management skills they will use forever, including how to do their taxes. The award-winning Tax Day each February has student "tax advisors" doing their classmates' taxes under the watchful eye of Falls alumni in the accounting field who come back to help inspire passion in their industry.

The school board considers the personal finance course so important that this winter it decided to make the class a graduation requirement.

Construction to begin

on former Lied's Nursery

Menomonee Falls — Wisconsin-based home builder, Veridian Homes, will soon begin construction on the 137 home sites that will become Silver Spring Estates.

Located along Town Line Road on what is formerly part of Lied's Nursery, the 105-acre site will have an estimated value of $58 million upon completion.

The Silver Spring Estates neighborhood will consist of home sites ranging from 11,700 to 44,600 square feet, and include a number of homes that back up directly to the golf course at Silver Spring Golf Club.

Pricing for the first phase of homesites will be released during the summer of 2014. Home and lot packages are expected to range between $300,000 to $600,000 or more.

Veridian Homes plans to maintain the character of Lied's Nursery, said president of operations David Simon, and will transplant existing trees whenever possible.

An un-named tributary to the Fox River surrounded by an environmental corridor will be preserved as a recreational amenity, three stormwater retention ponds will be added and walking paths also will be developed.

"Silver Spring Estates is going to be a magnificent community that will only add to Menomonee Falls' small town charm," saSimon said. "We realize that we're building our neighborhood in 'Wisconsin's Largest Village,' and we want to ensure that we'll preserve that feeling here."
