District projects budget decrease, tax increase
Menomonee Falls — A preliminary 2013-14 budget presented to the Menomonee Falls School Board on Monday shows the district spending less money than last year but needing to tax more as a result of a loss in state aid.
While total revenues and expenditures are estimated to decrease by about 0.75 percent, an estimated 15 percent decrease in general state aid means the local tax levy will have to increase by about 2 percent to support the budget.
Business Manager Jeff Gross estimates the district tax rate will increase by about 2 percent to $12 per $1,000 of assessed property value. For the average Falls taxpayer with a $250,000 home, that means an increase of $55 on the district tax bill over last year.
The School Board will vote on a preliminary budget at its Aug. 12 meeting before a 2013-14 budget and levy are approved by district residents at the Sept. 9 annual meeting.
Gross stressed that the budget and tax numbers are preliminary until state aid and enrollment numbers are solidified in the fall.
"It's our best estimate at this point in time," Gross said, "until we get additional information in October."
Germantown — The Germantown School Board on Monday approved a district-wide technology plan, which should help guide the district in the coming years.
Board member Bruce Warimont abstained on the vote. While discussing the plan, he expressed concern that by approving the technology plan, the board could be committing to instituting certain parts of it.
"I've already seen things in here that would probably lead to some big, huge discussions," Warimont said. "I'm always leery of the 'gotcha effect,' that if we approve the plan you get to do (certain things)."
Superintendent Jeff Holmes assured the board that the plan is more of a "guidance document."
"As administrators and teachers and staff, we ought to be able to refer back to this," said Holmes. "(The plan) will be our guide for recommendations we make to the board in the future."

Menomonee Falls — The Menomonee Falls Senior Dining Site located in the Menomonee Falls Community Center is in need of volunteer drivers and dining assistants. Both positions are vital to the operation of the dining site.
Volunteer drivers are needed to deliver meals to home-bound seniors over the lunch hour from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Drivers use their own vehicles and are reimbursed for their gas mileage.
Volunteer dining assistants are needed to help pack meals for home delivery, set up, serve and clean-up for in-house dining. They typically work from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
Volunteering once a week or twice a month can make a huge difference in the health of the seniors served.
