Eighth-grade boys team 10th in state tourney

The Germantown eighth-grade boys basketball team took 10th in the Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament in Marshfield and Stevens Point in March.

This tournament, which was organized by he Great Northwest Basketball League, brought together 106 of the top community-based eighth-grade boys basketball teams from the state of Wisconsin.

State champions were crowned in four divisions, and the Germantown team played in Division 1. In pool play, they defeated Marshfield, 64-44, Madison Memorial, 63-56, and Bay Port, 66-38. In the round of 16, they fell to Menomonee Falls, 55-47, and in the consolation playoffs, they defeated Waukesha West, 78-54, but then fell to Wisconsin Rapids, 52-45.

Sun Prairie defeated Oak Creek 41-33 to win the Division 1 championship.

The Germantown team was coached by Derrick Kumbier and Mike Weitermann, and Cole Karcz of Germantown was named to the all-tournament team for Division 1, along with Josh Karls of Menomonee Falls.

Germantown's Wagner earns UW-Whitewater honors

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater senior and women's cross country/track and field athlete Katie Wagner of Germantown was recently recognized for her academic and athletic performance and her community service.

Wagner is majoring in communicative science and disorders and has a cumulative GPA of 3.5. She earned USTF/CCCA All-American team honors in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and has been on the dean's list for six semesters.

She has been track and field team captain for two years, cross country team captain for one year, and was voted Most Inspirational/Best Encourager by the team for three years. She was also the Marty van Steenderen Sportswoman of the Year for cross country and earned the WIAC All-Sportsmanship award for track in 2009.
