Hamilton Wrapups: May 1

Sussex - It wasn't a pretty day on Saturday by any stretch of the imagination, but the Hamilton varsity girls soccer team wasn't going to let that ruin the weekend. After all, it was Prom Night, and just hours after Hamilton suffered a somewhat humbling, 6-0, loss at Kettle Moraine.

Playing at home in a nonconference game against Milwaukee Lutheran, the Chargers won easily, 5-0, over the Red Knights, scoring twice in the first half and three times in the second half. Possessing the ball seemingly at will, Hamilton outshot Milwaukee Lutheran, 20-1.

Junior Robyn Elliott, the team's leading scorer this season with 19 points (8 goals and three assists) had a hat trick on Saturday. She scored in the 13th minute, the 39th minute and the 48th minute.

Another junior, Morgan Gilbert, had the fourth goal of the game for the Chargers in the 56th minute and had the assist on the fifth score of the game in the 59th minute from freshman Taylor Mears.

Earlier in the week, Hamilton shut out Brookfield East, 2-0, in a Greater Metro Conference game, getting goals from sophomore Hannah Menzia and junior Rachel Elliott. To date, Hamilton is 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the GMC.

"Kettle Moraine is a really good team, probably one of the better ones around, and their shots went in and ours didn't," Hamilton head coach Tom Konkol said. "But we did some excellent things here today, moving the ball around the way we're capable of."

Konkol said there are 19 players on this year's nearly revamped roster, and 17 are enjoying extended minutes.

"I think the best teams have starters and nonstarters playing," Konkol said. "Against Brookfield East, we did that, and it makes a difference."

The Chargers haven't fatigued as much as opponents this season.

"I've got a rotation set, but now it's not just the starters held accountable; the nonstarters are also," Konkol said. "Some of the nonstarters got their first goals (against East), and that's always great to see."

The Chargers host Wauwatosa West (4-3-2) on Thursday before traveling to West Allis Hale, jumping back into the GMC on May 8.

"We've got several brand new players to the varsity, but they're training hard and they're serious about what they're doing," Konkol said. "I think we're doing pretty well."

Softball now 4-1

Hamilton's varsity softball team remained in the early season race for supremacy in the Greater Metro Conference.

After a tough, 18-13, loss April 23 against Menomonee Falls, the Chargers improved to 4-1 in the conference with a 16-0, five inning victory against Brookfield Central on April 26.

Katie Weber had three hits and two runs scored against the Lancers. Whitney Wnuk, Tori Meyer, Emily Jansen and Katie Baker all had two hits against Brookfield Central in support of winning pitcher Sydney Sprinkel. Sprinkel pitched all five innings, allowing only three hits and one walk.

Sprinkel suffered the loss, pitching four innings against the hard-hitting Indians on April 23. Menomonee Falls and Hamilton each totaled 19 hits, but the Chargers committed seven errors.

Jansen also pitched against Menomonee Falls.

Kelsey Mason went 5 for 5 with a double, triple and five RBIs. Bailee Bobert, Jenny Shernell and Sami Williams all had three hits. Taylor Vigani had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Today, the Chargers host West Allis Central (1-6). On Thursday, Hamilton is at Brookfield East (5-3), and Friday, the locals host Waukesha West (0-6) in a nonconference game.

Track fifth at Lake Geneva

Hamilton's boys and girls track teams finished in the middle of the pack Friday at the Lake Geneva Badger Invite.

In fact, both teams scored the same amount of points (65), good for fifth place.

Kettle Moraine won the boys portion of the meet with 142 points, and Cary Grove (Ill.) was second with 134 points. In the girls meet, Cary Grove was the top team with 170 points, and Arrowhead was second with 151 points.

Toney Lock won the girls 100-meter finals at 13 seconds. Shannon Burke won the pole vault at 10 feet, 6 inches. Ashlyn Paulson was third in the 800 with a time of 2:25.59.

The relay teams had a field day. Buckley, Lock, Jessica Rupnow and Casey Allen won the 4x100 in 50.49 and the 200 in 1:47.

Rupnow joined Buckley, Paulson and Katie Pollari to win the 4x400 with a time of 4:05.96.

In the boys meet, Ryan Zagorski finished fourth in the 200 at 24.30. Dan McKee took second place in the 3,200 at 9:53.33.

Joel Fotsch was third in the 110 hurdles at 16.58, and Chais Blackburn was fourth at 16.78.

Ernie Gray, Aaron Mushall, Zagorski and Drew Patterson raced second in the 4x200 relay at 1:33.78.

Patterson was fourth in the 100 at 11.72.

Golf team wins

Behind Nate Goecks' medalist round of 73 on Friday, the Hamilton boys golf team finished first in the Slinger Invite at Washington County Golf Course.

Hamilton edged Pewaukee by a stroke, 321-322. Slinger was third with 331, and Germantown was fourth at 364.

Austin Kendziorski shot 75, Nate Hermsen finished with 83 and Mitch Olson ended up with 90.

"We played well on a cool day in Hartford," Hamilton head boys golf coach Stan Grove said.
