Menomonee Falls girls basketball
The Indians got a badly needed win, when they won their opening game of the Fort Atkinson Holiday Tournament, 58-46, over DeForest on Dec. 28.
Falls, which played a second game in the event on Dec. 29 (past deadline), improved to 4-5 with the victory. The Indians host West Allis Central in a Greater Metro Conference game on Friday and then host nonconference opponent Homestead on Jan. 8 in their annual parents' night game.
Against DeForest, the Indians fell behind to the Norskies, 11-8 at the quarter but then took the lead at 21-19 going into the half and then expanded it to 42-32 at the end of three quarters. Mikayla Robertson led the way with 21 points including all six of her free throws while Erin Crownover had 10 and Amber Bullock eight and Haley Precia and Monica Carlson seven apiece.
Falls hit 19 of 26 free throws for the game.
Menomonee Falls wrestling
The Indians competed well on the first day of the Northern Exposure Duals at Merrill on Dec. 28, going 3-2 as a team as both Bill Holz at 126 pounds and Ayoola Olapo at 182 and 195 both went 5-0.
Falls, which still had two more duals in the tournament on Dec. 29 (past deadline), defeated Lodi, 36-31, Clintonville, 71-3, and New London, 41-22, before falling to Bay Port, 51-24, and Menomonie, 52-19.
Holz was very impressive, recording pins in all five of his victories, while Olapo had three pins at 182 pounds and two decisions at 195.
Others having good days, included Aaron Daly going 4-1 at 106 and 113 (two pins) and Sam Schwabenlander going 3-2 at 145 (three pins).
Menomonee Falls/Germantown/ Hamilton boys swim
The Indians used a balanced effort to take eighth in the 16-school Metro Swim Officials Invitational at Homestead on Dec. 27.
The co-op, which hosts the Greater Metro/Classic 8 Conference Relays at Falls on Thursday (diving at 4:30 p.m. and swimming at 6:30 p.m.) and then are at the Marquette Gator Invitational at the Schroeder Aquatic Center on Saturday, scored 137.5 points for its spot as Lake Forest (Ill.) scored 384.5 points for the title and Muskego (361) was second.
The meet featured college-length races and Matt Ciolkosz took advantage of that to earn a fourth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:37.06) while John Seiler did the same in the 200 butterfly (2:04.83).
Seiler was also third in the 100 butterfly with a fine clocking of 53.95.
Brad Kruppe was seventh in the 50 free (24.06) as was Sam Piette in the 100 free (53.51).
Other good finishes for the Indians included the following: 200 medley relay: Kruppe, Ciolkosz, Seiler and Sam Neale, 13th (1:50.21); 200 backstroke: Neale, 15th (2:19.62); 50 free: Piette, ninth (24.3); Ciolkosz, 14th (24.88); 100 free: Kruppe, ninth (53.71); Neale, 10th (53.86); 200 free relay: Piette, Ciolkosz, Kruppe and Seiler, eighth (1:35.89); and 200 individual medley: Cal Weber, 10th (2:19.85).
Ice Bears hockey
The Ice Bears co-op had a rough go of it in the Admirals Cup last week, falling to Stoughton 4-1, and then to North Shore rival Homestead, 10-3.
The two losses dropped the team to 3-6 overall. They are at Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago at 7 p.m. Saturday.
In the tournament loss to Stoughton, the Ice Bears got a goal from Tyler Acheson (assists from Ben Lena and Paul Des Jardins) and 21 saves from Myles Crichton and 10 saves from Tyler Cook.
Against Homestead, Lena had two goals and an assist while Acheson had the other goal.
Germantown girls basketball
The 7-3 Warhawks break their long holiday when they visit North Shore rival Nicolet at 7:30 p.m. Friday. They were last in action in a nonconference win over Arrowhead on Dec. 22.
