Waukesha's Whitmore sets national records at Pettit
Long-track speedskater Mitch Whitmore of Waukesha, who trains at West Allis' Pettit National Ice Center, set national records of 35.50 seconds in the junior 500 meters and 1:09.73 in the junior 1,000 meters during the recent North American Speed Skating Championships in Calgary, Canada.
The records were formerly held by Whitmore's old training partner, Brent Aussprung, who now competes as a member of the U.S. Senior National Team.
"I am so honored to set these two new junior records," Whitmore said in a news release. "It proves that with a lot of hard work and dedication, anything is possible. Next up are Junior Worlds in Zakopane (Poland) and I look to improve on a very successful season."
Two other skaters who train at the Pettit Center found success in Calgary.
Colton Barrett, a Minnesota native who lives in Milwaukee, placed fourth in the junior 3,000 meters, eighth in the junior 1,500 and 5,000 meters and ninth in the junior 500 meters.
Jeffrey Swider-Peltz of Illinois, who commutes daily to the Pettit, placed first in the junior 1,000 meters on the second day of the competition, had the fourth-best time in the junior 1,500 meters and placed seventh in the junior 500 meters.
