Sport Wrapups: Oct. 15

The Germantown girls swimming team got two wins apiece from Kelly Theis and Marin Thompson as the Warhawks competed well before falling to North Shore power Whitefish Bay, 104-76, on Oct. 7.

Germantown will be at the Homestead Highlander Invitational on Saturday.

Theis took both the 200 and 500-yard freestyles while Thompson claimed the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Other individual winners included Tess Van Hecke in diving and Shannon Miller in the 100 free.

That same quartet also claimed the 200 free relay.

Other good swims came from Lauren Utech, Katie Brown, Kayla Peplinski and Hannah Kurtenbach.

"I was very pleased with how our varsity performed at this meet," said coach Sara Petric. "We're in a good position heading into our final few meets. I am looking to our captains, Shannon and Marin, to contribute some big points in the coming meets. They have done a good job leading our squad this season."

Heading into this Saturday's North Shore Conference meet at Tendick Park in Saukville, it's safe to say that the Warhawks will take a backseat to no competitor, even if they are top-ranked in state and defending WIAA champion Whitefish Bay or number three-ranked Homestead.

"Conference this year is important, but it won't be our primary focus," said Warhawks coach Nancy Pietrowiak. The Warhawks are in a good frame of mind because they'll be well-versed in the vagaries of Tendick Park in Saukville as they won the Port Washington Invitational there Oct. 8.

It was their second major meet title in a row and third of the season.

The Warhawks will try to play spoiler in what will be an extremely deep NSC meet as Homestead looks to break the decade-long stranglehold of Bay on the title. The varsity girls race will be at 11:10 a.m. Saturday.

Germantown dominated the 13-school Port meet with 63-points as the host Pirates were a distant second with 103. Caitlin Dillon in second (14 minutes, 50 seconds) and Liz Wendt in third (15:12) led the way and set personal bests in the bargain. Dillon was only four seconds off Kate Lydy's 4,000-meter school record.

Other scoring runners included Andrea Sielicki in 13th (15:39), MacKenzie Erdmann in 14th (15:40) and Amanda Brittain in 31st (16:40). Also running were Andrea Brown in 34th (16:53) and Becca Rasmussen in 42nd (17:06). Erdmann's time is a season best.

The Warhawks junior varsity also won with Hannah Knapp (second), Steph Gasper (fifth) and Tori Becker (eighth), leading the way.

Behind a one through four sweep in diving, the Indians used depth to overpower a sound field and win the Sheboygan South Redwing Invitational on Saturday.

"We're normally pretty tired for this one (because of hard training)," Indians coach Jim Weitzer said, "and actually we were, but the kids swam really well. There were a lot of nice surprises all the way through."

Falls/Hamilton, which will be at the Homestead Highlander Invitational on Saturday, scored 420 points to win the 10-team Redwing meet. Sheboygan North was second with 367.

The divers gave the Indians 68 points and a substantial advantage before any swimmers actually hit the pool. Sarah Tighe won with 444.55 points while her sister, Emily, was second with 384.35. Cori Messerschmitt was third (335.9) and Ali Kornbuger (288.8) was fourth.

Weitzer said that long-time diving coach Larry Kluwe has done an excellent job and has gotten help from Theresa Tighe, Sarah and Emily's mother.

Tighe's win was the only first of the meet for the Indians as depth played a big role for Falls.

Other top four finishes by event included the following: 200-yard freestyle - Briana Botros, fourth (2:05.54); 200 individual medley - Grace Devine, third (2:21.32), Haley Lucas, fourth (2:21.56); 50 free - Amanda Siehs, third (25.9); 500 free - Botros, second (5:29.92), Hannah Mast, fourth (5:31.28); 200 free relay - Sommer Semanek, Emily Blackwell, Sarah Werner and Botros, third (1:48.29); 100 breaststroke - Dana Kucharski, fourth (1:15.3); 400 free relay - Siehs, Botros, Lucas, and Devine, fourth (3:51.28).

The Indians rolled into the end of the regular season on a positive note, beating Verona, 3-1, on Saturday, after forging a 2-2 tie with Greater Metro Conference champ Brookfield Central on Oct. 6.

"We're doing well," Indians coach Scott Stein said. "Our defense has been pretty good as a unit and we're working on getting a little more dangerous collectively on offense."

Falls finished the regular season at 14-7-3 (including 4-1-2 in the GMC, good for third), its sixth consecutive winning record.

"It's funny, we've had this streak so long now that our freshmen have no idea of how hard it was to get to this point," Stein said. The Indians earned the fourth seed in the WIAA's Brookfield Central sectional and will host Milwaukee Hamilton in a regional semifinal Tuesday.

If they win that game, they would host the winner of Tosa East-West Allis Hale in a regional final Thursday, most likely at 7 p.m. Sectional play will be Oct. 22 and 24 (TBA).

"This sectional is loaded again," Stein said. "There are 12 or 13 teams that could win a game or two easily."

In the win over Verona, Elliott Janssen Saldivar broke a 1-1 tie early in the second half (assist Gonzales), while Skylar Hying added an insurance mark (A.J. Patterson). Nick Dorst got the first goal (Stewart Van Horne) as Ben Dederich made 13 saves.

Against Central, the Indians rallied from a 2-0 deficit to forge the tie with the Lancers (6-0-1, 9-4-2). Nick Burgoyne (A.D. Gonzales) scored in the 46th minute while Corey Volden (Van Horne) got the equalizer with just three minutes remaining.

The Warhawks closed out their regular season on an impressive note, scoring North Shore Conference wins over Homestead (3-2) on Oct. 6 and Nicolet (4-2) on Oct. 8.

With the two wins, Germantown closed out the campaign at 8-9-1 overall with a winning league mark of 4-3. The Warhawks earned the 10th seed in their WIAA sectional bracket and will take on Homestead again on Tuesday, in a regional semifinal. If they win that game, they advance to a regional final, likely at Brookfield Central Thursday, TBA.

Against Nicolet, the Warhawks cruised to a 3-0 lead and coasted home. Goals were scored by Nate Schlitt (2), Sean Kimmitt and Mike Scherer. Assists went to Scherer and Brad Bane as Robert Huss made six saves. Germantown outshot Nicolet 13-8.

In the win over short-handed Homestead, which was missing all-state caliber forward Gabe Genovesi (strep throat), the Warhawks rallied from a 2-1 second half deficit to earn the win. Captain Travis Sheridan (Mac Drengller assist) and Bane (Dylan Leeper) had the decisive goals just four minutes apart in the second half.

Bane had given the Warhawks a short-lived lead in the first half courtesy of an assist from Scherer. Huss made eight saves.

"Homestead is a very talented team and we were able to find a way to win," said Warhawks coach Steve Sperl. "… Brad Bane continues to make himself dangerous and Travis Sheridan scored one of the top goals I have seen out of anyone this entire year."

The Indians season came to an end Oct. 7, when singles player Hayley Schlueter and the first doubles team of Caitlyn Stockhausen and Claire VanAlstyne lost in the quarterfinals of WIAA sectional play at Waukesha West.

"I thought both Hayley and the doubles team played very well in their respective matches," said Indians coach Bryant Buhr. "Hayley played the defending state champion Aly Coran (from Homestead). I thought she was in every point and had a really nice showing. She lost 6-1, 6-1, but I don't think the score really shows how well she played. The doubles team got out to an early lead, 5-2, before losing the next 5 games (and the match 7-5, 6-0), which was heartbreaking. They played very well to get out to the early lead."

The defending state team champion Homestead squad won every flight and scored 56 points at sectional while the Indians tied for 10th with six.

Buhr was just a little discouraged with the season as a whole.

"Overall I thought it was pretty disappointing," he said. "I think we started off relatively well and then hit a midseason lull. … Then we started turning things around. … I think we are still a young team and as long as the girls are willing to work hard and improve, I think the program is going in the right direction."

Seniors on the varsity this fall included Stockhausen, VanAlstyne, Natalie Misasi, Nicolette Figueroa and Brooke Bentzler.

Brittany Dudzik took third place at third singles in the WIAA sectional tournament at Waukesha West on Oct. 7 as the Warhawks closed a solid season well.

Dudzik lost to a Homestead opponent in sectional semifinal match but then beat a Catholic Memorial player for third.

"We had a tough sub-sectional this year, but Brittany played really well," said Warhawks coach Scott Bicknell. "She has made some great strides this year and really brought her "A" game (to the sectional). She should be proud of what she accomplished."

The Warhawks scored nine points to tie for eighth in the sectional. Defending state champion Homestead won every flight to claim the title with 56 points.

Germantown will be graduating nine of 14 off the varsity unit including Alyssa Stressing, Hannah Goretta, Celina Mastronardo, Jessica Knudson, Samantha Taylor, Kari Walters, Hillary Grgich, Adriana Enriquez and Dudzik.

"It was a privilege to work with all the girls this year," Bicknell said. "Next year we will be relying on several of our JV players to step up and fill in the roles the seniors played. I look forward to it."

The Warhawks took third in the Washington County Invitational on Saturday at Kettle Moraine Lutheran.

Germantown will now look forward to the North Shore Conference Tournament on Saturday at Homestead (9 a.m.). Nicolet is the defending champion, but the tournament will likely be a battle involving the Knights, Germantown, Homestead and Cedarburg.

In pool play at the county meet, the Warhawks lost to West Bend West but then beat Kewaskum and Hartford. In championship round play, they lost to eventual champion Kettle Moraine Lutheran before beating West again.

In NSC dual play, the Hawks (4-2) rallied for a 14-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-15 win over Grafton on Oct. 8 as Taylor Neinfeldt had 12 kills and 10 digs, while Brittany Baxter had 18 assists, Bethany Baxter four assists and Carley Sanfilippo seven blocks.

In a rare light week, the Indians cruised to an easy 25-9, 25-6, 25-12 Greater Metro Conference win over Wauwatosa East on Oct. 6.

The victory improved the state-ranked Indians to 5-1 in GMC duals while leader DSHA stayed unbeaten (6-0) with a rout of Brookfield East the same night.

Falls got eight kills from Melissa Fuchs, 18 assists from Emily Eyssautier, 10 digs from Taylor Golabowski and six aces from Dani Hartmann.

The Indians will celebrate parents' night Tuesday against Brookfield Central and will now try to unseat DSHA in the GMC Tourney and defend their league title. The tournament will be held at West Allis Hale on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.

Senior Lisa Wishmann closed out the Warhawks season on a positive note, turning in an 18-hole score of 107 in the WIAA sectional meet at Westhaven in Oshkosh on Oct. 7.

A score of 87 was needed to qualify as an individual for state. North Shore Conference medalist, Homestead's Katie Zganjar, earned the final spot after a playoff. Arrowhead (342) and Neenah (353) earned the state team berths.

Wishmann's effort closed out an improved season for Germantown, which started the season with 17 golfers. The only other senior in the group this fall was Allison Lotz.

Using a reserve lineup, the Warhawks were a respectable seventh of 12 in the Port Washington Invitational at Tendick Park on Oct. 8.

The Warhawks will be back at Tendick on Saturday for the North Shore Conference race, where they will try to defend their title in the 11:45 a.m. varsity race.

Germantown will look to use its depth to hold off charges from Port, Whitefish Bay and Homestead.

In the Port meet, the Warhawks scored 178 points for their spot, while Appleton East won with 33.

Tim Lydy led the way, taking 15th on the 5,000-meter course in 17:33. Other runners included Gary Hackney in 31st (18:02), Matt Lehner in 38th (18:18), Riley Shelton in 39th (18:18), Austin Pethan in 55th (18:55) and Michael Feilbach in 57th (18:56).

Running a reserve squad, the Indians boys finished 10th of 12 at the Port Washington Invite on Oct. 8, while the girls, who competed with their regular varsity squad, were 11th.

The two teams will now compete in the Greater Metro Conference meet at Washington Park in Milwaukee on Saturday (TBA).

In the girls Port meet, the Indians scored 256 points while Germantown won with 63. Mikayla Robertson in 36th (16:59) and Jamie Ertl in 37th (17:00) led the way. Other scoring runners included Alyssa Barczak in 53rd (17:21), Haley Precia in 64th (17:48) and Katie Smalley in 66th (17:55).

Also running were Meghan Braatz in 73rd (18:30) and Emma Lodl in 74th (18:45).

The Falls boys scored 278 points for its spot while Appleton East won with 33.

Josh Richie was 36th (18:13), Dominic Thomas, 46th (18:36), Tyler Wittmann, 48th (18:37), Dan Farrenkopf, 72nd (19:34), and Ben Bartos, 76th (19:58). Also running were Alex Hrovat in 78th (20:09) and Paul Heitman in 79th (20:10).
