AGMF Featured Member Ryan Miller
This is the Seventh of a Series featuring Members of our Creative Community within the Art Guild of Menomonee Falls.
Ryan Miller of Mequon is one of the Art Guild’s younger members. To see his art you would not expect to see such a youthful face for work that shows an experienced eye and masterful hands. A recent BA in Arts graduate of UW Green Bay, gives him a strong graphic arts background but it was Ryan’s natural talent that was evident from an early age. Although he does claim to be self taught, Miller does credit his grade school art teachers and college art professors for their influence and support. Some of his favorite pieces are still his pencil and crayon drawings from his childhood.
When this young artist was asked why he creates his art, his answer was, to understand himself, others, and the world around him in the best way he knew how. There is no doubt that as he grows older his art will evolve even more. Miller’s mediums of choice are pastels and oils, while landscapes are his favorite subject matter. Like most artists he does venture off into other subjects and mediums, but the real emotions and artistic spirit flows when he uses those pastels or oils. With Door County at his feet during college, you can see the influence the area had on his finished work. You can almost feel the warm breeze, smell the flowers and hear the birds sing as you let yourself get pulled into a garden scene. It is no wonder that Ryan has shown his work at several galleries. Galleries that have presented his work include; the A. Francis Hardy Gallery - Ephraim, WI; Dovetail Gallery - Egg Harbor, WI; Outpost Gallery - Egg Harbor, WI, and took part in the National Scholastic Exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Various Lawton Gallery Exhibitions at UW-Green Bay, Neville Museum also in Green Bay and the Cedarburg Plein Air Juried Exhibition round out this young man’s list of experiences. Besides the gallery circuit, Ryan has several impressive accomplishments including being commissioned to create a promotional artwork for the 2007-2008 season of the New York Youth Symphony, taking home the Scholastic Silver Key Art Award, earning a Northeastern Wisconsin Arts visual arts scholarship, and winning a Lawton Gallery Award for Excellence (2D) and Distinguished Painting Award. His most recent success was this past summer when he participated in the Annual Mt. Mary College Starving Artists Show.
So what is left for Ryan to learn or create? To illustrate a children’s book and or create a large scale public painting / mural, was miller’s answer. Has the guild helped you as an artist? It has. ”It is a great networking tool while connecting with others in the community who share the same interest and love of art as me. It’s also an opportunity to learn and grow in the arts while helping others to do the same.”
The Art Guild of Menomonee Falls is a creative group of people that meet to provide local artists living in and around Menomonee Falls with opportunities and resources for networking, exhibitions, and artistic development workshops. Together we hope to raise awareness about visual arts and encourage community involvement and interaction with the arts.
